Other

The Maine Council of Churches has named the Rev. Dr. William M. Barter as executive director, effective Oct. 1. Barter is an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and will also continue as senior pastor at St. Ansgar Lutheran Church in Portland. A native of Bath, Barter graduated from Cheverus High School in Portland and obtained his B.A. from the University of Southern Maine, master of divinity degree from the Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. from Walden University. He was ordained in 1982. He serves as a regional representative on the New England Synod Council of the ELCA and is also a licensed psychologist in Maine. Prior to being named executive director, he served as vice president of the Maine Council of Churches. 

St. Ann’s Episcopal Church recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and has announced a $500,000 capital campaign to support the church as it continues to expand in the Lakes area. In 1973, St. Ann’s was received as a mission into the Diocese of Maine and celebrated communion Nov. 30, 1974, at its new church on Windham Center Road in Windham The first full-time and current rector, the Rev. Tim Higgins, was hired in 2006 and the church has continued to grow.
