24-hour wilderness race comes to western Maine

The Associated Press

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Adventure seekers are taking part in a 24-hour race where participants mountain bike, paddle and run over a rugged wilderness course in western Maine using maps and compasses.

Untamed Adventure Racing is bringing its endurance test to Carrabassett Valley and Sugarloaf ski resort. The race begins Saturday morning.

For the competition, two-, three- and four-person teams are traveling together over a course beginning at Sugarloaf. But the course itself wasn't revealed until Friday, the day before the race.

A 6-hour "Sugarloaf Solo" adventure race for beginners is also being held in conjunction with the 24-hour race.
