BRIDGTON — A first floor apartment was destroyed by a fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon in a multi-unit apartment building at 116 South High St. in Bridgton.

District Fire Chief Todd Perreault said the fire gutted the first floor apartment and caused some damage to a second floor apartment before it was brought under control by firefighters.

Perreault said the building houses about 12 apartment units. No one was at home in the first floor apartment at the time.

The cause of the fire, which was reported at 2 p.m., is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office.
