Meet the candidates for Portland school board

At large seat candidates

Pious Ali

Age: 44
Address: 184 Pearl Street
Occupation: Human Service Counselor for City of Portland refugee services. Founder and executive director of the Maine Interfaith Youth Alliance.
Family:  Divorced, father of two children in Portland public schools.
Political experience: No elected office 

Deborah Brewer

Age: 44
Address: 82 Shepherd Lane
Occupation: Nurse
Family: Married to Christopher Brewer, three children in Portland Public Schools
Political experience: No elected office. Served on school parent-teacher organizations and volunteered in classrooms.

Ralph Carmona

Age: 62
Address: 105 North St. #1
Occupation: Retired public affairs executive and teacher
Family: Married to Vana Carmona; five adult children.
Political experience: No elected office, ran unsuccessfully for Portland mayor; University of California Board of Regents (appointed; 1995-1996); delegate to the 1972 Democratic National Convention.

Gene Landry

Age: 55
Address: 94 Bay View Drive
Occupation: Owner, Persistence Media, an online video production company
Family:  Married to Rita Heimes, four children, three of whom are in Portland public schools.
Political experience: No elected office. Landry has served as a class volunteer and special events committee member at local schools.

Frederic Miller

Age: 71
Address: 26 Mayer Road
Occupation: Retired; former broadcaster and substitute teacher in English and Communications.
Family: Married to Ruth Miller; three grown children who attended Portland public schools.
Political experience: No elected office. Ran unsuccessfully for Maine House District 117 last year; ran for Portland school board and city council in the 1980s.

Anna Trevorrow

Age: 31
Address: 51 Myrtle St. #2
Occupation: Legislative aide for three independent legislators, director of Portland-based educational nonprofit Green Initiatives.
Family: Partner, Anthony Zeli.
Political experience:  Elected member of Portland Charter Commission. Former Maine Green Independent Party state chairwoman. Ran unsuccesfully for school board, state House District 120.

District 3 (uncontested)

Laurie Davis

Age:  61
Address: 134 Oakdale Street
Occupation: Executive director of TRIO Programs at University of Southern Maine,  a college access and sucess program.
Family: Three adult children, all graduates of Portland public schools.
Previous experience: Incumbent, Portland school board. Elected to charter commission. Worked for the Portland school district for 10 years as the No Child Left Behind coordinator.
