The family of Brendan Conway, the popular coach of Deering High School’s freshman boys’ basketball team who died Thursday while playing basketball, say they assume his death was due to an undiagnosed heart condition.

The family has not yet received the results of an autopsy from the Maine Medical Examiner’s office, said Jo Conway, Brendan Conway’s sister-in-law Sunday.

She said the family believes at this point that the 34-year-old, who seemed healthy with no known medical conditions, must have died from an undiagnosed heart condition after collapsing while playing basketball at the East End Community School.

His memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Deering High School gymnasium.

A wake is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave.

Conway was a former Deering High School athletic director and varsity tennis coach, a graduate of Deering High School and Bates College. He was a sales agent for Maine Real Estate Network in South Portland.
