WESTBROOK — Westbrook police today charged a local man with criminal restraint, a felony, and misdemeanor assault after he allegedly enticed a young girl to walk away from a bus stop with him.

Police today arrested Steven J. Morrill, 53, of Chestnut Street in connection with the incident reported earlier this week.

Police say a witness saw the incident unfolding in the Bridge Street neighborhood near where Morrill lives.

“This witness promptly intervened and prevented a potential abduction,” the department said in a press release.

Based on the report, police conducted surveillance of the area and followup investigation leading to Morrill’s arrest.

Morrill’s criminal history dates to the 1970s and includes sexual abuse of a minor in 1993 and furnishing liquor to a minor in 1986, the department said. Morrill was convicted of arson in 2004 and sentenced to a year and two months in prison.
