Women march topless in Portland without incident

The marchers want to call attention to the double standard in society's attitudes toward male and female nudity.

By Edward D. Murphy emurphy@mainetoday.com
Staff Writer

PORTLAND – About two dozen women marched topless from Longfellow Square to Tommy's Park this afternoon in an effort to erase what they see as a double standard on male and female nudity.

A group of women and men who had shed their tops march down a Congress Street sidewalk from Longfellow Square to Tommy's Park. They were promoting the freedom of women to be topless in public. The group attracted many amateur and professional photographers.

Gordon Chibroski/Staff Photographer

The women, preceded and followed by several hundred boisterous and mostly male onlookers, many of them carrying cameras, stayed on the sidewalk because they hadn't obtained a demonstration permit to walk in the street. About a thousand people gathered as the march passed through Monument Square, a mix of demonstrators, supporters, onlookers and those just out enjoying a warm and sunny early-spring day.

After the marchers reached Tommy's Park in the Old Port, some turned around and walked back to Longfellow Square, but most stayed and mingled in the park. Some happily posed for pictures.

Police said there were no incidents and no arrests – nudity is illegal in Maine only if genitals are displayed.

Ty McDowell, who organized the march, said she was "enraged" by the turnout of men attracted to the demonstration. The purpose, she said, was for society to have the same reaction to a woman walking around topless as it does to men without shirts on.

However, McDowell said she plans to organize similar demonstrations in the future and said she would be more "aggressive" in discouraging oglers.

Perhaps if the reason for the walk would've been for something along the lines of bringing attention to breast cancer, it might have had a better (and more dignified) turnout. As my husband points out to me all the time, men are all about breasts. While it was wonderful that you ladies felt comfortable to march downtown baring your breasts, all you did was give the men preceding you and following you (with cameras) a free show.

This was a first for Portland. That is probably the reason it brought such a crowd. It definetly brought awareness. I'm sure every single one of those guy onlookers will happily inform their female friends that it is legal to be topless next time they're sunning on the Eastern Promenade. So where the organizer thinks it was so horrible so many men showed up, I think it still accomplished the same goal. She should atleast be grateful for that.

There is also a "DOUBLE STANDARD" for men wearing women's clothing. If a man walked down the street wearing a dress and heels,he would be stared at and talked about, but yet women can wear any clothing they want without ridicule. So yes "double Standards" work both ways!!! Same women that marched today would probably be enraged if a man walked down the street with a dress on and high heels....Truth

Problem being Its been Illeagle for so long that people stare when they see a womens breasts.. But think nothing of a man walking bare chested!!I say what the hell.. let them go bare chested it will eventully be seen as just another person walking down the road or street for this matter!

Come on, we buy things because there is a nice pair of boobs in the picture! Just add this "demonstration" to the nutty things that go on in Portland. Anyone who was "enraged" that men were interested in seeing bare breated women doesn't understand the sexes or what interests men about women. Breasts can be a real attention getter and any woman with an ounce of feminie sexuality knows it. I hope for the benefit of those who watched that those who marched were more attractive than the run of the mill San Francisco or Berkley topless marcher who is usually sagging and dragging their pathetic bodies in protest of cutting trees or using bombs. I'm sure the pictures will surface, however not in these pages.

First of all, TY, men are pigs, or so we men have been told all our lives. So you are surprised?? Second. Our country was founded by people so puritanical the English kicked them out (they weren't called puritans because of their love to party). So we are surprised that a nation colonized by elitist white men would have a "double standard" for women? Third, the reason why the clothing optional double standard needs to go is, the more we hide something the more desirable it becomes. In Europe, females are not ashamed of their breast or forced to hide them. Though the men still admire women's breast, they don't hold the "mystic attraction" that they do to the men of the USA.

This could have went better if it wasn't AS announced and more organized. Too many creeps were able to find out about it and follow the entire time. Also, starting it at, Longfellow Sq.....come on now...weirdo central, not a good choice. This should have been totally random and unannounced until the very last minute. Hopefully the next time this will be better organized to keep the total perverts/pedo's attending to a minimum. I'm a close friend of Ty's and was also in the walk today. 1st, it wasn't really a demonstration, or a protest or a march, it's already legal, so that would be pointless. 2nd, Ty's not some like political organizer, this all started on Facebook, it was just something some friends were going to be doing together, than the media got hold of it, and soon there were more spectators than participators. When we saw the huge crowd, we were all shocked (and a little scared). Ty was more surprised and yeah a little disgusted (but that's just Ty) and I don't ever recall her being enraged. I think there were so many people because the female form is SO hidden, and people were just curious. I won't sit here and say I didn't look at some of the womyn, I totally did, and I was participating! lol. I think as usual both sides just need to cut the other one some slack. 'Course if that were the case, this wouldn't be in the news! lol

"I think there were so many people because the female form is SO hidden" I disagree. Women today are wearing fewer clothes, more form-fitting clothes, and showing more skin than ever before in the United States. Ironically, much of this is due to mostly male-controlled media influencing choices. A large portion of the female population doesn't realize that they're being played. Perhaps the organizer is pi**ed because today's march backfired, but what would was her expectation? That everyone would politely applaud with eyes averted?

I'm not saying this would be a solution, but it would be far more affective if you just had women all over Maine participate in this as a social movement (not an event) wherever shirts aren't required and whenever men and women, as equals, felt like it. Everyday. Don't schedule an event. Don't have women gather together. To do otherwise recognizes the double-standard and brings in all the oglers to take pictures that the organizer is against.

Like any change, this draws a lot of attention now but as people become accustomed to seeing women naked it will become common and no big deal. Anyone who has ever spent anytime on a nude beach knows that the excitement wears off and sexual projections that we put on women go away so we can begin to have a real conversation with women without all the sexual tension. The first time it happened to me it was life changing. Most men have a long way to go to discover that what they are looking for from women they will never find. I used to go to all of the fantasy fests in key west, but stopped because I got sick of seeing men act so stupid, like they never saw a naked body before. It was embarrasing.

Seriously ladies, as a feminist from way back, I think most would agree that there are WAY bigger issues to worry about in the realm of women's rights (or lack thereof). Instead of being enraged that there's a double standard regarding toplessness, how about some outrage about lack of affordable quality daycare, domestic violence, sexual violence, discriminatory healthcare practices, wage discrepancies, eating disorders, and job opportunities for women? And those are just the issues facing the US--for even more challenging cultural misogyny go overseas and take a look at genital mutiliation, "honor" killings, and genocide via rape and violence. Focusing on toplessness instead of the bigger (read: more important) issues makes all of us look like we have nothing better to do than make idiots out of ourselves.

It essentially created a frenzy of idiotic men leering at topless women. How feminist was that? How successful did the participants feel with nasty old men videotapeding them? What message will children who observed get from this? Will girl children feel empowered? Will boy children learn to respect women's bodies? How did this effect our multicultural community? The embarrassing thing was how the men behaved and while it is probably hopeless to beleve that this demonstration gave the men an opportunity to take a look at themselves and perhaps one or two might see themselves for the idiots that I see. Men give women way too much power, they are ambivialent because of it and I think that is what is behind the love/hate relationship that men have with women. Sexuality is the catalyst. The result is domestic violence and abuse. Maine men are still in the dark ages when it comes to understanding that.

My observation is that most men are with women because they need to be not because they choose to be. Men go into relationships with women beleving that women will complete them in some way but they never can because women are haveing a completly different life experence. I know far too many men who stay in unhappy relationships because they can't leave. They feel like they can't be without a relationship with a woman and so they dive right back into one. The only ones who understand men are other men, but because of our homophobia and competition most men cannot establish intimate (nonsexual)relationships with other men, thus men continue to look for something where it will never be found and become frustrated and blame women. IMO the men who appear to love women the most are the ones who hate them the most at a subconscience level. I think it is what fuels domestic violence and Maine has a poor record in that area.

Most men attempt to have close relationships with other men through sports but that too is frustrating because it can never supply the intimacy that men need. Men in combat get as close as anyone can but it has it's own love/hate elements. I believe these things because I was a part of a mens group since the early 90's and it completly changed my life to have intimate relationships with other men. All of us in the group agree that it has made our relationships with women much better because we are more balanced. Only men are capable of understanding men. Maine I think still has an orgainization called Mainely Men. The hold an annual meeting with workshops to assist men to become more balanced. My son and I have attended many of these and he is a much more balanced man because of it. He is also a man's man. He graduated top of his boot camp class and is a drill instructor. I didn't do a very good job of answering you question. Let me try again. Sex is a powerful thing because of the brain chemicals and all that. So we want it. Ok, no problem there but many men cross a line to get it and for some it becomes an obsession because the men obsessed are only looking at the sex. Women provide an outlet for the sex which is the fuel but men are also attracted to the intimacy, but they don't understand those feelings, they just know they are powerful. All these powerful feelings makes it hard to sort out what the answer is. It's like the drug addict who kills his dealer because he wouldn't supply the drug. Most men expect too much from relationships with women and when the woman can't supply what they need they get angry and frequently abusive. Most don't have a clue of what is motivating them.

trisailer, you seem pretty comfortable speaking on behalf of all men, and on behalf of abusers. I suspect you have been abusive because of this. Regardless of that, I'd recommend considering that your point of view may not be that common. Not every man can relate to a sex obsession, or the frustrations with women that you experience. There is no valid "frustration" or "chemical" excuse for abuse. Ever.

I'm not speaking on behalf of anyone other than myself. I was simply relating my own theory. I don't know a single man or woman who hasn't had issues understanding themselves and eachother in realationships. Perhaps you are unique in this regard. I was abusive once 25 years ago and I set out to understand it and get a handle on it. I never suggested that there is ever an excuse for abuse. About 2/3rds of the Maine women I've known in my lifetime have been abused by men, several are killed every year. Domestic violence hotlines average over 300 calls per day and every available bed for abused women in Maine is full so perhaps the world you live in is on another planet. The FBI reports that 18% of women are raped but only 26% is reportd. I think it is a serious problem.

Interesting that a lot of men were disappointed because the breasts didn't fit their idea of beauty. During the time of the Salem Witch hunts, women were tied to a wagon and thrashed from one town to the next as punishment, but only the young women were bare-breasted. One older 'witch' noticed this and asked why she wasn't nude on top? The male council said that would be demeaning. haha Horny old goats don't change.

Anyone remember that only the men were convicted of public indecency as the woman had no genitalia showing? I'm still trying to figure out whether an exposed vagina is or is not considered genitalia. Evidently in Maine, it is not. Reference http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/90388.html.

An early poster commented with disdain about this being a “free show”. Let’s examine the free aspects. It was free in that the current occupant of the White House couldn’t tax this free expression. It was a free physics demonstration of action/reaction pairs. It was a free vitamin D treatment (without Obamacare). It was an opportunity for people to practice (free) two skills simultaneously---leering and photography-----multitasking for the 21st century. It was a free stress test for old geezers and the terminally prudish. It was a free reality check for people who think women’s bare breasts in public would not be reacted to.

There is a reason why women cover their tops. Men are attracted to certain visual markers, this typically initiates certain innate reactions from men. There are very few Adonis lookalikes out there, clothing is a welcome change from sweaty, meaty, swaying, manliness. Adding swaying women parts to the mix will make for a very uncomfortable outing on a usually nice day, as would the sight of a giant walrus of a man. You can't deny it, it's science @_@

In this culture, where breasts are almost always covered in public, both men and women will stare when they are on display. For men in this society to not notice bare breasts in public, it will take the majority of women putting them on display for many years. Berlin is even wilder. People walk around in the summer in the middle of the street naked, or coated with body paint. With all that, my city is considered to be one of the safest in the world for women. Our rate of rape and other crimes against women is nowhere near what it is in the USA. It'd be nice if America would finally mature and grow up out of acting like a perpetual 15 year old kid when it came to matters like this. I won't be holding my breath.

Really, how ridiculous. Think how enraged these women would have been had they paraded around bare breasted in front of their boyfriend or husband and he had NOT noticed or been attracted! Apparently feminism has become a race to the bottom to display which sex can show the least class. Because that's sure what I would think upon seeing some man walking around downtown without a shirt. Repulsive and low class behavior! Save it for the beach or swimming pool where it is considered appropriate attire. This sure isn't the feminism I was taught as a girl growing up in the seventies! Too bad.

Newsflash for "enraged": What two features distinguish homo sapien females from ALL other female mammals? 1. Speech. 2. Bazooms. The ONLY reason women HAVE bazooms is because women can talk. Nature had to create SOME reason males would want to be around them. It is likely that Neanderthal females lacked zeebs... probably why they are extinct. To be "enraged" that men are attracted to what nature put there specifically to attract men just shows your ignorance. Public school? Liberal Arts college?

I'm fascinated by those from Europe telling American men that they are immature for ogling zeebs. This is the SAME Europe that is running out of kids, right? (I guess once you stop liking boobs, there's no remaining attraction - and the demographics show this as fact.) The SAME Europe that has so few, if any MEN left, right? I mean it's illegal in Germany for men to stand and piss in a washroom - and the 'men' put up with that. The SAME Europe that has no armies worthy of the name; that can neither deploy nor transport enough force to defend themselves, so American MEN have to do it for them? Thanks, but I'll take MEN any day over European metrosexuals. Maybe you haven't noticed, but an awful lot of women in Europe are going for Muslim males.. .maybe this is because they are still MEN.. and Euroweenies are NOT? Just a thought. I wouldn't be so awfully proud of not liking bazooms - they are there only for men to enjoy, you know.

If people were juggling carrots or dressed up like Martians others would gather and look. I think the best thing is to avoid marching and start living freely and the way nature made us without fear or shame...especially since it's legal...for a change! Go Maine! Now, if we could just finally accept the whole body we would be moving toward the non-sexualizing of the naked human form and the acceptance of others as they are, how they are. Anyone want to do the same thing in the midcoast area? I'll be there to help! :-)

Boo hoo? Bull crap. Decency standards shred any "double standard" chatter. Titheads turned Portland into a combat zone -- unfair to toddlers, some of whom were traumatized. How unfair is THAT? Pinheads -- I mean, titheads bounced down mainstreet, then received more media attention than all the performing musicians got elsewhere. Take for example one such event on Fri. PM at One Longfellow Square. GRAHAM [oh for chrissakes, did I get name spelling wrong on celebrity stuff again -- oh, anyways] PARKER. He took One Longfellow by storm. However, due to poor advertising prior-to, some empty chairs meant fewer people and a quieter positive follow-up buzz [pinheads, not talkin' drugs here]. "Buzz" as in talk about the dude's MUSIC -- 'twas excellent stuff. So what did local media do the next day? Turned press wheels into gold for exhibitionists. Ooooh, any from Oregon?! On a positive note, 4/3/10 blessed attentive future shrinks; exhibitionism is a psychiatric disorder.
