WISCASSET

Hunger program launched

A new program has been formed to supplement the Wiscasset school system’s free and reduced lunch program.

The Feed Our Scholars project aims to end hunger among the school’s neediest students by raising funds to support the Good Shepherd Food Bank’s weekend backpack project to send them home with some nutritious food rations each weekend.

Youth selected to receive the backpacks are discreetly chosen by school personnel from the towns of Westport Island, Wiscasset and Alna. Those chosen will only be known by the selecting individuals and their families.

The program is attempting to raise $10,000 to provide meals for 40 students, with more being added to the list of recipients as additional funds become available.

The cost is $6.50 per weekend packet, $25 per month or $125 per semester, per child to supply weekend meal packets as well as extended food supplies for weeklong school vacations.

Fundraisers, supporting the program, are scheduled and include a Spaghetti Supper & Silent Auction to be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at St. Philip’s Church, at 12 Hodge St. Cost of the meal is $8 for adults and $4 for youth.

A 5K Family Fun Run/Walk also is planned for 9 a.m. May 4 at the Wiscasset Community Center.
