LePage signs $6B state budget

AUGUSTA — Senate President Kevin Raye, R-Perry, said today that Gov. Paul LePage has signed the two-year, $6 billion state budget.

"It's a validation of the great work of the Appropriations Committee," Raye said. "It reflects the core values of his original budget."

Raye said the budget includes "the largest tax cuts in the history of Maine," pension reform and welfare reform. Last Friday, LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett said LePage continued to have concerns about the welfare reform piece.

The budget easily passed the House and Senate with supermajorities last week. It calls for $150 million in tax cuts, and cuts in the pension system to help pay down an unfunded liability in the state retirement system. It also includes a one-year freeze on increases in state worker pensions.

The Legislature is on break until next week, when it will consider remaining bills and recent vetoes handed down by LePage.
