Portland's first gluten-free bakery to open in August

PORTLAND — Portland will get its first full-fledged gluten-free bakery in August.

Bevin McNulty, owner of Bam Bam Bakery, has been making wholesale gluten-free baked goods in her home for the past two years, but now she's ready to expand and take her products direct to consumers.

McNulty is renovating 267 Commercial St. in the Swasey pottery building, the space formerly occupied by Green Furniture Design, and plans to open a bakery and coffee shop there.

"I've been working from home for two years, and I've totally outgrown my space," McNulty said. "I don't have room to do it from home anymore. I've been looking for spaces for a while, and I finally found the right one."

Gluten-free products do not contain the protein gluten, found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye. People who have celiac disease, a condition that disrupts absorption of nutrients in the small intestine, are often prescribed a gluten-free diet to treat their symptoms.

McNulty said she hopes to expand the variety of her gluten-free baked goods in addition to simply producing more in the larger commercial space, perhaps adding gluten-free pizza and quiches to the menu.

"It's going to be a full retail bakery and coffee shop – a comfy place to come and hang out and get some work done, with free wifi and those kind of things," she said.
