WASHINGTON — Maine's Sen. Susan Collins is getting married.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins with her fiance, Thomas Daffron.
Collins, 59, got engaged Sunday to Thomas Daffron, a public policy and political consultant in Washington who was chief of staff to William Cohen when Cohen represented Maine in Congress.
The couple bought a townhouse on Capitol Hill a year ago. They have been close friends for many years and began dating about two years ago, Collins' office said Thursday.
A spokesman for Collins said the couple plan a small private wedding in Maine this summer, though no date has been set.
Daffron is originally from New York. He and Collins met when they worked for Cohen while he was in the U.S. House in the 1970s.
Daffron has managed or consulted for state and federal campaigns over the years, including for Collins. He is now chief operating officer for Jefferson Consulting Group. The firm does lobbying, but Daffron is not a registered lobbyist.
This is the first marriage for Collins and the second for Daffron. Collins will maintain a full-time residence in Bangor, her office said.
