Police search for man in Bangor Savings heist

PORTLAND – Police were searching late Tuesday for a man who robbed the Bangor Savings Bank branch on Brighton Avenue earlier in the day.

The man entered the bank in the Pine Tree Shopping Plaza shortly after 9 a.m., threatened the teller and left with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. The man did not show a weapon.

He was seen headed inbound on Brighton Avenue but may have gotten into a vehicle at Brighton Avenue and Rand Road, police said.

Several customers and employees were in the bank at the time, but no one was injured.

Police swarmed the area and used a police dog to try to track the robber. Police did find some articles of clothing that he may have discarded, and an evidence technician dusted for fingerprints inside the bank on surfaces the robber may have touched.

The robber is described as white with a dark goatee, about 6 feet tall with a medium build. He was wearing a black-and-gray sweatshirt with "ECKO 72" on the front, a dark knit cap and sunglasses, police said.

Yellow Light Breen, a spokesman for Bangor Savings Bank, said this is the first time the branch has been robbed. He said although no weapon was shown, it was an emotional ordeal for the workers and the two customers who were inside at the time.

The bank was closed right after the robbery and was expected to reopen Wednesday morning, Breen said.

Breen commended the employees and the police on the way they responded.

"The alarm was pulled virtually immediately and the police responded virtually immediately," Breen said.

Bangor Savings Bank is the largest bank headquartered in Maine, with 56 branches statewide.
