OAKLAND – A couple from Bangor who were interviewed by police in connection with a missing firefighter from Florida switched cars at a dealership on Kennedy Memorial Drive earlier this week.

On Thursday, after receiving a tip from the dealership, police impounded the car the couple left behind.

Rod Pelkey, a manager at Lee Credit Now, said Daniel Porter, 24, and Cheyanne Nowak, 25, bought a car sight unseen from an office in Bangor, then drove to Oakland on Tuesday to pick it up.

While there, the couple asked Pelkey if they could leave their old car until they returned from a trip to Florida.

Pelkey said he read a newspaper story about police seeking Porter and Nowak in connection with the disappearance of Jerry Perdomo of Orange City, Fla., who was last seen Feb. 16.

In the report, police said the couple were traveling in a white 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer, the car they left at the dealership.

Pelkey said Porter looked disheveled during Tuesday’s transaction.

Porter said he was going through a family emergency.

Pelkey said the couple paid for the car with cash, but wouldn’t say what the price was.

“It was a lot of $20 bills,” he said.

On Thursday, police said they believed that Porter and Nowak may have had contact with Perdomo shortly before he disappeared.

Bangor Deputy Chief Peter Arno released a statement Friday saying the couple had been found and the investigation was continuing.

Police said Perdomo drove from Florida to Bangor, where his rental car was found abandoned Feb. 17 in a Walmart parking lot.

He was last seen wearing a black zip-up hooded sweatshirt, shorts and black sneakers.

He is described as being Hispanic, 5 feet 11 inches and about 200 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
