LePage taking part in Gettysburg commemoration

The governor will tour the battlefield with the Maine and Alabama National Guard and take part in a ceremony at Little Round Top.

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA — Maine Gov. Paul LePage is headed to Pennsylvania to participate in celebration for the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.

The Republican governor will take part in a ceremony at Little Round Top Wednesday evening.

LePage will also tour the battlefield with the Maine and Alabama National Guard and offer brief remarks.

The governor says he is proud to participate in the ceremony that honors the sacrifice of Maine soldiers, who played a crucial role in the battle.

The 20th Maine Regiment's defense of Little Round Top is considered one of the war's pivotal moments. LePage's office says it's possible the Southern army could have marched on Baltimore and Washington D.C. if Maine's 20th had not held back Confederate advancements at Little Round Top.
