Skiing Made Simple

5 p.m. in Newcastle

This winter Hidden Valley Nature Center will boast 30 miles of trails. This week it is partnering with Healthy Hometowns ski lease program to get more kids on skis. Wednesday at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle, kids can lease ski sets for $65 for the whole season. The Healthy Hometowns Program, a branch of the Maine Winter Sports Center, works to make skiing more accessible for Maine families. The program uses introductory-level packages. The program helps put 1,500 youth on skis each winter. Youths ages 4 to 15 are welcome. Call 200-8840.

Hiking Stories

7 p.m. in Brunswick

Join Michelle and Stan Moody, Appalachian Mountain Club Maine chapter leaders, on their photo journey of the Northern Cascades. The Moodys led hikes for the AMC August Camp that was located near Concrete, Wash. The scenery boasts snow-covered peaks, pristine lakes, waterfalls and wildflowers. The Appalachian Mountain Club meeting will be at the Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick. Free and open to the public. A potluck dinner will precede the presentation. Bring a food item to share and “be green” by bringing your own plate and utensils. 

Waldo County Hike

10 a.m. to noon in Unity

Join Waldo County Trails Coalition for a Dec. 14 hike that starts at the kiosk at the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardners Association’s field on Crosby Brook Road. Among the sites are Sandy Stream; foot bridges and bog bridges that the Trails Coalition made; the old Elwell farm; and a spectacular view of Unity Pond. The Waldo County Trails Coalition (www.waldotrails.org) comprises nine organizations working to link 40-plus miles of existing trails in order to create a continuous “Hills-to-Sea Trail” from Unity to Belfast.
