Deering High School has hired Matt Riddell as its head football coach. Riddell, 44, served as the team’s interim coach for the last five games in 2013

The Rams went 1-8 in a rebuilding season. Riddell began the season as an assistant coach, but was appointed interim coach after head coach Scott Parsons was dismissed after the fourth game of the season, a 13-12 loss to Massabesic, for an inappropriate comment to an official.

Riddell, 44, has been a coach with the Maine Sabers, a semi-pro team in the New England Football League, for the past two seasons and was the head coach of the Southern Maine Raging Bulls in 2001, earning coach of the year honors.

Riddell has also coached the Bonny Eagle freshmen.

Riddell played football at Lewiston High.
