DIXFIELD — Kaine Hutchins recovered a fumble in the end zone in overtime Friday night to give fourth-seeded Dirigo a 20-14 victory against fifth-ranked Old Orchard Beach in a Western Class D football quarterfinal.
Dirigo will be at top-ranked Winthrop-Monmouth Academy in the semifinals next weekend.
Old Orchard (5-4) missed a go-ahead field goal to start overtime. On the ensuing Dirigo possession, the Seagulls forced a fumble on fourth-and-goal from inside the 5, but it was recovered by Hutchins for the win.
The lone scoring of the first half was an Old Orchard safety in the second quarter. Dirigo (6-3) pulled ahead 14-2 early in the fourth on touchdown runs by Tyler Frost and Brett Beauchesne.
The Seagulls cut the deficit to 14-8 on an 11-yard touchdown run by Bryan Roberts, then tied it on a 24-yard pass from Roberts to Tyler Scott late in the fourth quarter.
Roberts rushed for 138 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries, and completed 7 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown for the Seagulls.
Beauchesne rushed for 100 yards on 24 carries.
KENNEBUNK 48, MORSE 6: Nicco DeLorenzo rushed for 75 yards and a pair of touchdowns on eight carries for the top-seeded Rams (9-0), who took a 20-0 first-quarter lead and cruised past the eighth-ranked Shipbuilders (3-6) in a Western Class B quarterfinal at Kennebunk.
Nick Emmons added 57 yards on three carries, and also completed 3 of 4 passes for 109 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Rams.
Both touchdown passes were caught by Austin Sandler, a 49-yarder in the first quarter and a 20-yarder in the second.
Liam Studley also scored a pair of touchdowns for the Rams, one rushing and one on an interception return.
Kennebunk also got an interception return for a touchdown by Chris Broadhead.
Liam McDonough scored for Morse on a 49-yard run in the fourth quarter.
WINTHROP-MONMOUTH ACADEMY 40, TELSTAR 0: Top-seeded Winthrop/Monmouth (9-0) established its offense midway through the first quarter and dominated the eighth-ranked Rebels (2-7) in a Western Class D quarterfinal at Winthrop.
Quarterback Jared Hanson got the Ramblers going midway through the first quarter with back-to-back completions to Brandon Goff and Phil Rowe of 18 and 20 yards. Zach Glazier capped the drive with a 6-yard run, breaking three tackles. Later in the half, Jake Weeks ripped off scoring runs of 47 and 68 yards.
Between the scoring runs from Weeks, Hanson threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Drew Stratton, who made a sliding catch in the deep left corner of the end zone.
MESSALONSKEE 28, HAMPDEN ACADEMY 21: The third-seeded Eagles (6-3) went 57 yards in seven plays, scoring on Corey McKenzie’s 7-yard run with 1:41 left to beat the sixth-ranked Broncos (5-4) in an Eastern Class B quarterfinal at Oakland.
When Jake Dexter intercepted Matt Martin at the Messalonskee 15 with 53 seconds left, the Eagles had earned their spot in the semifinals next week against No. 2 Mt. Desert Island.
