Maine colleges: St. Joe’s wins in field hockey, 1-0

The Monks score off a penalty corner to beat UM-Farmington.

STANDISH — Theresa Hendrix scored off a penalty corner to give St. Joseph’s a 1-0 GNAC field hockey win over UM-Farmington on Wednesday.

Meghan Williams served as the corner injector and pushed a long left-to-right pass to Carley Denis, who dropped the ball off to Hendrix in the middle of the circle.

Hendrix immediately turned and fired a knuckleball shot to the left corner of the cage with 13:10 remaining in the first half.

Curran Brierley made four saves for the Beavers (6-6, 5-3) and Emma Astbury made one stop for the Monks (12-2, 6-2) to record her seventh shutout of the year.

COLBY 9, THOMAS 0: Megan Fortier scored three times in the first 9:02, and the Mules (8-4) rolled to an 8-0 halftime lead against the visiting Terriers (5-9).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

ST. JOSEPH’S 2, SUFFOLK 1: Desiree Parent’s goal with seven minutes left in the first half proved decisive as the Monks (14-2, 9-1) edged Suffolk (5-11, 5-5 GNAC) in a GNAC game in Standish.

Lauren Chouinard delivered a lofting pass to Parent, who was streaking in toward the right post.

Rams netminder Melissa Brouillette left the net to challenge, but Parent footed the ball on a short hop just before Brouillette arrived and followed the shot into a wide-open goal to make it a 2-0 game.

Hannah LeBlanc scored the first goal of the match 1:54 after the opening whistle.

The Rams’ Taylor Miranda scored on a pass from Gabrielle Balestrier with 3:10 left in the opening half.

St. Joe’s keeper Jaci Lorenzen made nine saves in the victory, while Brouillette made seven stops.

GORDON 1, UNE 0: Lauren Hayes scored at 2:04 of the second overtime period to lift the Scots (15-2, 7-0 Commonwealth Coast) over the Nor’easters (8-7-1, 4-2-1) at Wenham, Mass.

Brielle Robinson made 11 saves for UNE, which had a 26-25 edge in shots.

MEN’S SOCCER

GORDON 1, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: Andy Guthrie scored in the 74th minute as the Scots (15-1, 6-1) topped the Nor’easters (6-7-3, 1-5-1) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game in Wenham, Mass.

Josh Spoonhour made a pair of saves for Gordon.

Nor’easters goaltender Aidan McParland stopped six shots.
