NFL notes: Owner will stay out of RG III decision

Coach Mike Shanahan is expected to decide his quarterback’s fate Wednesday.

From News Service Reports

WASHINGTON — Daniel Snyder, the Washington Redskins’ owner, won’t intervene into the team’s quarterback situation this week as Coach Mike Shanahan contemplates sitting down starter Robert Griffin III for the remainder of the season in favor of backup Kirk Cousins, a person familiar with the situation said Tuesday.

Washington Coach Mike Shanahan is expected to decide Wednesday whether quarterback Robert Griffin III will miss the rest of the year.

“He won’t step in and interfere with that,” the person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic. “He’s not going to step into a personnel decision that way.”

Shanahan said Monday he would decide by Wednesday whether to sit down Griffin because of the number of sacks that the second-year quarterback has absorbed in recent weeks.

If Griffin sits, Cousins would start Sunday’s game at Atlanta. Shanahan said Monday that Griffin would not play again this season if it’s decided this week that he won’t play against the Falcons.

The relationship between Snyder and Griffin has been cited as being central to the issues between Shanahan and Snyder, with multiple people close to the situation saying they expect the team and its fourth-year coach to part ways soon after the season at the latest.

Washington promoted rookie running back Jawan Jamison to the active roster.

TITANS: Tennessee re-signed offensive lineman Kevin Matthews and released tight end Visanthe Shiancoe.

PACKERS: Running back Ahman Green and left tackle Ken Ruettgers will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame next summer.

BENGALS: The team waived fullback Chris Pressley, who was sidelined the entire season by a knee injury.

THE NFL will move the matchup between Chicago and Philadelphia to the prime-time slot on Sunday, Dec. 22, with New England’s game against Baltimore moving to 4:25 p.m.

RAVENS: Baltimore placed receiver Brandon Stokley on injured reserve, ending his season.

BILLS: Buffalo activated rookie defensive back Jonathan Meeks off the injured reserve/designated for return list.

CARDINALS: Arizona placed rookie defensive back Tyrann Mathieu on injured reserve and promoted safety Curtis Taylor from the practice squad to take the vacant roster spot.

CHARGERS: Linebacker Manti Te’o said his rough rookie season has nothing to do with the needling he’s faced over getting fooled by a hoax involving a fake girlfriend while at Notre Dame.
