KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Ryan Reid, a Portland native, allowed two runs in one inning Monday, but got the win when the New York Mets scored five times in the ninth inning to beat the Atlanta Braves 6-2 in an exhibition game.

Reid, claimed off waivers by the Mets from the Pirates in December, allowed two singles and two walks against the Braves. He also threw a wild pitch that scored a run.

Freddy Garcia ran his streak of perfect innings to five in his bid to earn a spot in the Braves’ rotation, and the Mets’ top prospect, Noah Syndergaard, pitched two scoreless innings in his spring training debut.

• David Robertson pitched a scoreless fourth inning in his first appearance as the Yankees’ new closer in New York’s 4-2 victory over the Washington Nationals at Tampa, Fla.

Derek Jeter went 0 for 3, including a double-play grounder. He is hitless in seven at-bats over three spring training games.

• Robinson Cano had two hits and an RBI and Dustin Ackley had a three-run double among his two hits, as the Mariners beat the Rockies 8-1 at Peoria, Ariz.

Mark Rogers, of Orrs Island, pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Mariners.

• Brad Miller hit a solo homer and Chris Taylor had a grand slam in the Mariners’ 6-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Goodyear, Ariz.

Charlie Furbush of South Portland pitched one inning for the Mariners and allowed one run.

 

RANGERS: Texas claimed infielder Andy Parrino off waivers from the Oakland Athletics.

 

INDIANS: After converting 49 consecutive saves from 2011 to early 2012, John Axford has another streak going.

The Cleveland Indians’ closer went 18 for 18 on his Academy Awards picks.

Axford made the projections after the Indians’ game Sunday on his Facebook page. Last year Axford was correct on 14 of his 15 Oscar selections; he picked Steven Spielberg as best director for “Lincoln” and Ang Lee won for “Life of Pi.”

Axford received a Bachelor of Arts degree in film and television from Notre Dame.

“I hope he’s as good when it comes to saves,” Indians Manager Terry Francona said.

 

METS: Mike Piazza is back with the team, working as a spring training instructor.

Piazza is tutoring Travis d’Arnaud and the team’s other catchers.

Piazza hit .308 with 427 homers with 1,355 RBI during a 16-year career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins, Mets, San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics. He received votes on 62.2 percent of Hall of Fame ballots in voting announced in January, 49 shy of the 75 percent necessary for induction.

Piazza has worked with the Italian national team as a hitting coach and was invited by the Mets in September.

“I’m not a real aggressive coach,” he said. “The way I was taught is just talk hitting and talk philosophy, approach at the plate, getting a good pitch. It’s kind of simple. It’s not very technical, it’s not the way I learned.”

D’Arnaud, who grew up in Lakewood, Calif., rooted for the Dodgers and idolized Piazza.

 

DIAMONDBACKS: Patrick Corbin will start when Arizona opens the major league season against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Australia on March 22.

 

PADRES: Center fielder Cameron Maybin is going to be out 2 to 3 months after rupturing his left biceps tendon during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

 

ORIOLES: Johan Santana was at Baltimore’s training complex. The left-hander threw for the Orioles and several other teams last week in Fort Myers, Florida.

Baltimore hasn’t officially commented on a possible minor league deal for Santana, who last pitched in the majors in 2012 for the New York Mets.
