PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brittney Cummings scored a pair of first-half goals for the University of Maine in a 3-1 victory over Brown in a nonconference field hockey game on Sunday afternoon.

Kelly Newton also scored a goal for the Black Bears (9-4), and Jocelyn Mitchell and Mallory Anderson each had an assist.

Brittany Fleck finished with two saves for the Black Bears, who held a 25-5 advantage in shots over Brown (2-9).

 

BABSON 2, BATES 1: Colleen Kelly scored on a give-and-go from Anneliese Brosch with 2:16 left in the first overtime period to lift the Beavers (10-3) over the Bobcats (2-7) at Babson Park, Mass.

Bates opened the scoring in the 21st minute on a goal by Sarah Merullo. The Bobcats remained in front until the 63rd minute when Babson got the equalizer from Courtney Weaving.

Katie McEnroe finished with 12 saves for the Bobcats, who were outshot 25-15 in the game.

 

BOWDOIN 7, WHEATON 0: The sixth-ranked Polar Bears (9-0) scored five goals in the first 28 minutes and cruised to their sixth shutout of the season as they downed the Lyons (10-4) at Brunswick.

Kassie Matoin had two goals and Katie Herter collected two assists to pace the Polar Bears, who outshot Wheaton 31-1.

Bowdoin also got one goal and one assist apiece from Cathleen Smith, Ingrid Oelschlager and Elizabeth Clegg.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 1, MAINE 0: Carole LeBlanc scored off a rebounded free kick in the 27th minute as the Wildcats (5-6, 1-2 America East) handed the Black Bears (6-4, 2-1) their first home loss of the season in Orono.

Maine keeper Meagan Price-Leibenzeder finished with four saves and Carolyne Nellis recorded a team-high six shots for the Black Bears.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

MERCYHURST 6, MAINE 1: Meghan Agosta and Kelley Steadman each scored goals in the first three minutes of the game as the third-ranked Lakers (4-0) cruised past the Black Bears (2-2) at Orono.

Brittany Dougherty scored her third goal of the year for Maine.

Brittany Ott had 45 saves for Maine.

TOP 25: Ohio State is the new No. 1 in The Associated Press poll.

The Buckeyes moved up one spot after preseason No. 1 Alabama lost for the first time this season. The Crimson Tide fell 35-21 on Saturday at South Carolina.

Oregon is No. 2, followed by Boise State, TCU, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Auburn.

Ohio State received 34 first-place votes and Oregon (15), Boise State (eight), TCU (one) and Oklahoma (two) also got first-place votes from the media panel.

The Crimson Tide slipped to No. 8, LSU was No. 9 and South Carolina moved up nine spots to 10th after the program’s first victory against a top-ranked team.
