Boys' Roundup: Cheverus surprises South Portland

PORTLAND - Andrew Ferrick and Emmanuel Ismail scored 11 points each Thursday night as Cheverus upset South Portland 56-51 in an SMAA boys' basketball regular-season finale at Keegan Gymnasium.

South Portland (15-3) is expected to retain its No. 1 seed for the Western Class A tournament and advance to the quarterfinals. Cheverus (6-12) is expected to sneak into the 11th and final qualifying position, which would mean a prelim game, likely at Scarborough.

Cheverus led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter and made free throws down the stretch to hold on.

Tanner Hyland made four 3-pointers and finished with 21 points to pace South Portland. Ben Burkey scored 14.

LAKE REGION 60, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 50: Mike Mageles had 17 points to lead the Lakers (5-13) past the Patriots (4-14) at Naples.

Mageles scored six in the third quarter, when the Lakers outscored the Patriots 19-10 to pull away from a 23-20 halftime lead. Mark MacDougall scored seven in the quarter and finished with 14, and Adam Falk finished with 11 points with 16 rebounds.

WAYNFLETE 80, SACOPEE VALLEY 31: Serge Nyirikamba scored 14 points to lead the Flyers (15-1) against the Hawks (0-17) at South Hiram.

Jack Cutler added 11 points and Pace Hutchinson scored 10 for Waynflete, which led 21-5 after the first quarter.

FALMOUTH 69, YARMOUTH 35: Thomas Coyne poured in 22 points as the Yachtsmen (17-1) handled the Clippers (10-8) at Falmouth.

Jack Simonds contributed 10 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, and Charlie Faye had eight points with 10 rebounds.

SCARBOROUGH 60, KENNEBUNK 31: Sam Terry notched 16 points as the Red Storm (12-6) cruised past the Rams (1-17) at Kennebunk.

Brendan Hall and Kevin Manning added 13 points apiece, and Matt Hartl scored 10 for Scarborough.

BONNY EAGLE 49, WINDHAM 35: Dustin Cole made 9 of 10 foul shots in the second half and finished with 21 points to lead Bonny Eagle (15-3) over the Eagles (7-11) at Windham.

Ben Malloy added 10 points for the Scots. Thomas McGowan paced the Eagles with 13 points.

WESTBROOK 56, GORHAM 50: David Breunig had 15 points to spark the Blue Blazes (13-5) past the Rams (6-12) at Westbrook.

Bruenig scored six in the fourth quarter to help Westbrook pull away from a 38-38 tie through three quarters. Aaron Duncanson added 11 points and Keenan Lowe put in 10 for the Blue Blazes.

THORNTON ACADEMY 65, BIDDEFORD 43: Quinn Richardson-Newton scored 20 points and Jeffrey Gelinas added 14 for the Trojans (11-7), who took a 20-9 first-quarter lead and cruised past the Tigers (5-13) at Saco.

Evan Wright chipped in with 11 points and Reuben Moses scored 10.

SANFORD 74, MASSABESIC 50: Ryan Camire had 32 points to lift the Spartans (10-8) over the Mustangs (1-17) at Waterboro.

YORK 69, WELLS 62: Zachary Leal scored 24 points and Aaron Todd added 22 as York (17-1) got by the Warriors (10-8) at Wells.

Wells took an 21-14 lead in the first quarter. The Wildcats rallied to go ahead by 10 points in the third, but Wells trimmed the lead to 63-60 in the final minutes. Leal and Todd both were 4 of 4 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and York inched away with free throws.

CAPE ELIZABETH 54, GREELY 46: Henry Babcock scored 13 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as Cape Elizabeth (13-5) beat Greely (9-9) at Cumberland.

Babcock was perfect in eight attempts at the free-throw line.

SEACOAST CHRISTIAN 57, A.R. GOULD 56: Logan Archer and Silas Thompson scored 19 points apiece as the Guardians (11-7) held off the Bears (10-8) at South Berwick.

Seacoast led 57-53 when Zacharia Mohamed hit a 3-pointer for A.R. Gould. The Bears got a steal on the next Seacoast possession but missed a last shot.

BOOTHBAY REGION 72, WISCASSET 58: Anthony DiMauro had 29 points with 10 rebounds to power the Seahawks (17-1) past the Wolverines (10-8) at Boothbay Harbor.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 61, POLAND 38: Bright Amoako had 21 points as the Raiders (10-8) upended the Knights (4-14) at Poland.

TRAIP ACADEMY 50, NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 45: Atencio Martin scored 13 points, including two pivotal free throws down the stretch, as the Rangers (7-11) topped the Panthers (7-11) at Yarmouth.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 56, FREEPORT 37: Quincy Grace scored 19 points as Old Orchard Beach (14-4) downed the Falcons (3-15) at Freeport.

MORSE 61, LEAVITT 48: Liam McDonough scored all of his 17 points in the final three quarters as the Shipbuilders (7-11) pulled away from the Hornets (6-12) at Bath.

HOCKEY

FALMOUTH 7, BONNY EAGLE 0: Hugh Grygiel and Alden Bohrmann each scored twice as the Yachtsmen (11-2) shut out the Scots (11-3) at Falmouth.

GREELY 5, CAPE ELIZABETH 4: The Rangers (10-4) rallied for three straight goals in the third period to edge the Capers (5-10-1) at Portland.
