BRUNSWICK - It was a frustrating night for the Bowdoin College men's hockey team, which outshot Amherst College 40-24 and outplayed the Jeffs everywhere but on the scoreboard, falling 6-3.
Conor Brown scored twice for Amherst, which improved to 12-5-2 and 8-4-1 in NESCAC. The Jeffs chased Polar Bears goaltender Steve Messina to the bench with four first-period goals.
Dan Weiniger had a goal and an assist for Bowdoin, which dipped to 16-2-1 and 10-2-1 in conference play.
COLBY 5, HAMILTON 1: Five players found the back of the net for the Mules (4-13-2, 2-10-1 NESCAC), who used three third-period goals to put away the Continentals (5-11-3, 3-8-2) at Waterville.
Robert McCormick, Cory McGrath, Ben Chwick and Jack Bartlett each had a goal and an assist. Ray Zeek also scored.
MIDDLEBURY 72, BOWDOIN 61: Nolan Thompson scored a game-high 19 points to lead the sixth-ranked Panthers (18-1, 6-1) as they built a 13-point halftime lead and held off the Polar Bears (12-7, 3-4) in a NESCAC game at Brunswick.
Andrew Madlinger and John Swords scored 14 points apiece to pace Bowdoin, which got no closer than seven points in the second half.
AMHERST 86, BATES 69: Aaron Toomey scored 27 points to pace the Jeffs (19-2, 7-0) as they closed out the game on a 29-11 run to pull away from the Bobcats (8-13, 2-6) in a NESCAC game at Amherst, Mass.
Mark Brust led Bates with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Ed Bogdanovich added 14 points and seven rebounds.
WILLIAMS 64, COLBY 61: Taylor Epley scored with 29 seconds left to break a 60-60 tie and lift the ninth-ranked Ephs (19-2, 7-0) to a win over the Mules (6-14, 2-5) in a NESCAC game at Waterville.
Colby's Patrick Stewart was fouled with 5.7 seconds left and had a chance to tie the game, but missed the second free throw after making the first.
Stewart finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Mules, and Sam Wilson added 12 points.
NORWICH 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Jillayne DeBus scored the eventual game-winner midway through the second period and the Cadets (15-2-3, 14-1-0) added three power-play goals in the third period to pull away from the Huskies (4-11-5, 3-7-3) in an ECAC East game at Northfield, Vt.
Liz Bergstrom finished with 26 saves for the Huskies, who were outshot 30-9 by Norwich.
TRINITY 2, BOWDOIN 1: Shannon Farrell scored a go-ahead power-play goal with 2:48 remaining and Alexa Pujol made 33 saves to send the Bantams (10-5-4, 5-3-3 NESCAC) past the Polar Bears (14-3-2, 8-2-1) at Hartford, Conn.
Madeline Lane gave Bowdoin the lead 13 minutes into the second, but Abby Ostrom tied it five minutes later.
SACRED HEART 6, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 1: Jenni Poulin scored the lone goal for the Nor'easters (1-9) as they fell to the Pioneers (15-11-2) at Bridgeport, Conn.
Courtney Kendall and Samantha Scobee combined on 45 saves for the Nor'easters, who were outshot, 51-23.
BOWDOIN 60, MIDDLEBURY 40: Shannon Brady scored 12 points to pace the Polar Bears (12-8, 3-4 NESCAC) over the Panthers (10-10, 2-5) at Brunswick.
Siena Mitman added 11 points and Megan Phelps put in 10 with nine rebounds for Bowdoin, which used a 14-0 surge to pull away midway through the second half.
WILLIAMS 60, COLBY 42: Claire Baecher finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Ephs (17-4, 6-1) past the Mules (7-13, 1-6) in a NESCAC game at Waterville.
