Maine Milestones

• Several local sailors from the Portland Yacht Club and Harraseeket Yacht Club placed well at the U.S. Sailing Northeast Junior Olympics held July 15-16 in Boothbay Harbor.

Saco Gold won the Charlie B. Snow baseball tournament in Saco, beating Mousam Valley Little League of Shapleigh 9-4 in the championship game on July 20. Caleb Robinson, of Falmouth and the PYC, won the Optimist Championship class, finishing no lower than third in all seven races. Joey Cholmyn, 12, of Freeport and the HYC, won his age group and placed second overall. Grace Mooradian, of Falmouth and the PYC, was fourth overall, and Griffin Primeau, 12, of Yarmouth and the HYC, finished third in his age group and 10th overall.

PYC's team of Cameron Loncoski and Eric Heilshorn, both of Falmouth, finished third in the Club 420 Championship class, just ahead of Ethan Merrill of Yarmouth and Dan Morse of Freeport, representing the HYC. Two other PYC teams were in the top 10 -- Cooper Siepert (Cape Elizabeth) and Audrey Morrin (Falmouth), seventh; and Clayton Sasaki (Falmouth) and Anna Morrin (Falmouth), 10th.

Three PYC sailors competed in their first regatta in the Optimist Green class -- Sierra Fahrman (Falmouth), third; Ethan Brouder (Cumberland), ninth and James Brouder (Cumberland), 13th.

• Two local girls' basketball teams representing the Maine Maniacs compiled 4-1 records and finished second in pool play at the U.S. Junior Nationals, held this past weekend in Washington.

The 15-U team rebounded from a one-point loss in its first game, winning its last four games by an average of 15 points. Team members are: Julia Champagne of Brunswick High; Sarah Hancock of Lake Region; Ally Hickey of Falmouth; Christine Miller of Maranacook; Brooke Reynolds of Edward Little; Tianna Sugars and Anna Winslow of Oxford Hills; Olivia Swan of Mt. Ararat; and Savannah Vinton-Mullens of Gardiner.

The 14-U team also suffered a close defeat in its first game, then posted four straight victories. Team members are: Montana Braxton of Cape Elizabeth; Cece Hancock and Spencer True of Lake Region; Maddie Hasson of South Portland; Margaret Hatch of Greely; Ashley Howe of Thornton Academy; Nia Irving and Dominique Lewis of Lawrence; Emily Jacques of Edward Little; Caitlin Kane of Mt. Blue; and Chloe Smedley of York.


• James Morse used a pitching wedge to make a hole-in-one on the 135-yard 15th hole at Biddeford-Saco Country Club on July 22. Chris Stasio witnessed the feat.


• Fred Dersham, playing with Jeff Turner and Andrew Perry, used a 5-iron to ace the 180-yard sixth hole at Bath Country Club on July 23.


• Derek Raymond used a 6-iron to record a hole-in-one on the 170-yard second hole at Falmouth Country Club on July 23.


• Bob Sommers carded his third career hole-in-one Sunday on the 125-yard 18th hole at Rockland Golf Club. He used an 8-iron for the shot, which was witnessed by Tom Jacobs and Chandler Woodman.
