Patriots' preseason finale hardly pointless

The Pats and Giants both must fine-tune their offenses, and Tim Tebow isn't the only one fighting for a job.

WHO: Patriots (2-1) at Giants (1-2)

WHAT: Final preseason game

WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Thursday

TV: Channel 8

Players from both teams who survived Tuesday's cut to 75 need solid performances to keep their jobs.

"If you're going to make a move, if you're going to show something, someone who is looking to make our team that hasn't made it before, I'd say that you need to get about the business of doing it," Coughlin said. "It's time. There's not a lot of time, but what opportunity you get to step on the field Thursday night, I'm hoping, for your benefit, that it's a good one."

Giants rookie quarterback Ryan Nassib is expected to get his first meaningful playing time. The fourth-round draft pick has completed just 3 of 10 passes, but Coughlin plans to use him once Manning goes to the bench.

But with Manning having played in 135 consecutive regular-season games, Nassib might not get on the field again this season.

THE PATRIOTS HAVE released cornerback Ras-I Dowling two years after drafting him in the second round.

Dowling played only nine games for the Patriots after being taken with the 33rd overall pick in 2011 out of Virginia. New England replaced him on the roster with rookie linebacker Ja'Gared Davis after he was waived by the Houston Texans.

The Patriots also claimed rookie defensive lineman Gilbert Pena off waivers from the Green Bay Packers and cut rookie offensive lineman Brice Schwab.
