UMaine has two baseball players drafted; Fransoso, Connolly picked in 27th round

University of Maine shortstop Michael Fransoso of Portsmouth, N.H., and pitcher/catcher Mike Connolly of Bridgewater, Mass., were selected in the 27th round of the 2013 major league draft. Fransosa went to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Connolly to the San Francisco Giants.

Fransoso, a senior, was the 2013 America East Player of the Year and a third-team All-American. He hit .352 this year with 49 RBI, 45 runs and four home runs.

Connolly, a junior, was named to the America East first team as a catcher and the America East second team as a pitcher. He was 6-4 on the mound and also hit .310 with 54 hits, including six doubles and a home run.

GOLF

PGA: Rookie Shawn Stefani overcame a quadruple bogey and shot a 4-under 66 to take the third-round lead in the St. Jude Classic at Memphis, Tenn.

LPGA: Morgan Pressel shot a 2-under 70 to take the lead by two shots over Inbee Park and Chella Cho after two rounds of the LPGA Championship at Pittsford, N.Y.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Joost Luiten of the Netherlands shot a 5-under 67, extending his lead to three strokes over Jorge Campillo and Eduardo de la Riva heading into the final round of the Lyoness Open at Atzenbrugg, Austria.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: David Frost birdied the 16th and 17th holes for a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples after the third round of the Regions Tradition at Birmingham, Ala.

MOTOR SPORTS

FORMULA ONE: Sebastian Vettel earned the pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix for the third straight year.

Lewis Hamilton also will be in the front row for Sunday’s race at Montreal.

BEECH RIDGE: Dan McKeage of Gorham edged Bill Rodgers of Old Orchard Beach by a car length in a battle of former division champions to win the 50-lap Pro Series feature. It was the first win since September 2011 for McKeage. Kelly Moore of Scarborough finished third, followed by Steve Carrier of Saco and Justin Drake of Vassalboro.

Other feature winners were Garrett Hall of Scarborough, Sport Series; Lewis Anderson of Hollis, Wildcat; and Brandon Barker of Windham, Road Runners.

SOCCER

MLS: The New England Revolution and D.C. United battled to a scoreless draw as Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth had to make just one save for his seventh shutout of the season. New England (5-4-5) is unbeaten through its last five (3-0-2) matches.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Diana Taurasi scored 15 of her 26 points in the second half and the short-handed Phoenix Mercury beat the defending champion Indiana Fever, 82-67.

DeWanna Bonner added 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Mercury (1-3), who were without leading scorer Brittney Griner, a late scratch with a left knee sprain.

FOOTBALL

NFL: A lawyer for Jets running back Mike Goodson told Newsday that the police report from Goodson’s arrest last month proves the co-defendant in the case, Garant Evans — and not his client — was in possession of a loaded .45-caliber semiautomatic.

Goodson, 26, faces five separate weapons and drug charges after he and Evans, 31, were arrested May 17 by New Jersey State Police on Interstate 80 in Denville, N.J.
