UMaine hockey features a Frozen Fenway game

The University of Maine announced the 2013--2014 men's ice hockey schedule, which includes a Frozen Fenway game against Boston University on Jan. 11.

The Black Bears open the regular season at St. Lawrence on Oct. 11.

The schedule also includes a rematch of the 2013 Hockey East quarterfinals, when Maine hosts UMass-Lowell on December 7, and a trip to Notre Dame -- which joins Hockey East for the first time this season -- on February 7 and 8.

The Black Bears return 18 letter-winners from last season, including six of the nine top scorers.

FIELD HOCKEY: Danielle Collins is the new head coach at the University of New England.

She replaces Dani Ryder, who resigned in May to become the head coach at Bates.

Collins spent the past three seasons as the top assistant at Brown.

MOTOR SPORTS

BEECH RIDGE: The Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough is scheduled to host its annual Miller Lite American Celebration -- Fireworks Show Tuesday night.

The event includes a 50-lap Pro Stocks feature as well as feature races in the Sports Series, Wildcat and Roadrunner divisions, plus a fireworks display.

The rain date is Wednesday.

On the Fourth of July, the track will run its regular Thursday Thunder show with racing in eight divisions. The two-hour program will start at 6 p.m.

SOCCER

U.S. NATIONAL TEAM: Joshua Gatt and Cory Ashe are battling injuries as the Americans prepare for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Midfielder Gatt hurt his left knee while playing for Molde in Norway, and Houston Dynamo defender Ashe is considered day to day after a recent thigh contusion.

The Americans will play Guatemala on Friday at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium before heading to the Gold Cup.

Their first tournament match is July 9, against Belize in Portland, Ore.

GOLF

PGA: The PGA Tour is going along with the new rule that will make it illegal in 2016 to use a long putter that is anchored to the body.

Commissioner Tim Finchem said that while several players oppose the new rule, it was important that golf be played under one set of rules.

The U.S. Golf Association and Royal & Ancient Golf Club are in charge of setting the rules for golf.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Citing team and league sources, ESPN reported that the New York Giants and Victor Cruz are expected to have a long-term contract completed before the start of training camp July 26.
