College Roundup: Top team takes tumble

MINNEAPOLIS — Trevor Mbakwe had 21 points and 12 rebounds to help Minnesota take down No. 1 Indiana 77-73 on Tuesday night, the seventh time the top-ranked team in The Associated Press' poll has lost a game this season.

Andre Hollins added 16 points for the Gophers (19-9, 7-8 Big Ten), who outrebounded Cody Zeller and the Hoosiers by a whopping 44-30 and solidified their slipping NCAA tournament case with an emphatic performance against the Big Ten leaders.

Zeller was held to nine points with four turnovers for the Hoosiers (24-4, 12-3), who have held the No. 1 ranking for 10 of 17 polls this season.

 

TENNESSEE 64, (8) FLORIDA 58: Jordan McRae scored 27 points and the Vols (17-10, 9-6 SEC) boosted their NCAA tournament hopes by beating the visiting Gators (22-5, 12-3).

 

(17) WISCONSIN 77, NEBRASKA 46: Reserve Sam Dekker matched his career high with 19 points to lead the host Badgers (20-8, 11-4 Big Ten) over the Cornhuskers (13-15, 4-11).

 

XAVIER 64, (19) MEMPHIS 62: Brad Redford hit a long 3-pointer that put the Musketeers (16-11) back ahead after wasting a 13-point lead, ending an 18-game winning streak by the visiting Tigers (24-4).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

(2) NOTRE DAME 79, (22) SYRACUSE 68: Kayla McBride scored 25 points as the host Irish (26-1, 14-0 Big East) overcame a 15-point first-half deficit to beat the Orange (22-5, 10-4) for their 21st straight win.

 

(3) CONNECTICUT 76, PITTSBURGH 36: Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had 19 points and 13 rebounds as the Huskies (26-2, 13-1 Big East) routed the visiting Panthers (9-18, 0-14).

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH'S 17, THOMAS 5: Cassie Diplock had three goals and three assists, Anneka Adame and Victoria Tenenbaum also had hat tricks, and the host Monks rolled past the Terriers in an opener at Deering Memorial Field in Portland.

MEN'S LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH'S 14, HUSSON 4: Jake Ricciardi scored four goals and Dalton Eldridge had three for the Monks, who used 12 unanswered goals in the final three quarters to beat the Eagles in an opener at Deering Memorial Field in Portland.

Andrew Hamill added two goals for St. Joseph's.

Chris DelGiudice had two goals for Husson.
