WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Maine women’s basketball team got clutch free throws and solid defense in the final minutes of a 49-43 win over Stony Brook Wednesday in the opening round of the America East Conference Tournament.

The eighth-seeded Black Bears (8-22) will play top-seeded Boston University (22-7) in a quarterfinal today at 12:05 p.m. The ninth-seeded Seawolves finished their season 4-27.

Stony Brook took its final lead, 43-41, on a 3-pointer by Dani Klupenger with 3:52 to play.

Brittney Williams tied it with two free throws and Samantha Baranowski put back a rebound for a 45-43 lead with 1:05 left.

Maine, which ended with a 45-32 rebounding advantage, forced a shot-clock violation on Stony Brook’s next possession. Danielle Walczak then made three free throws and Baranowski added a foul shot to close it out.

Baranowski led the Black Bears with 16 points, followed by Walczak with 10, Williams with nine and Rebecca Knight with eight.

Baranowski, Walczak and Williams each had eight rebounds, while Knight finished with four assists.

VIRGINIA 72, BOSTON COLLEGE 41: Ataira Franklin scored 20 points to help the Cavaliers beat the Eagles in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Ariana Moorer also scored 20 for sixth-seeded Virginia, who led big all night to give first-year coach Joanne Boyle a win in her tournament debut. Virginia advanced to face No. 6 Maryland in today’s quarterfinals.

Katie Zenevitch scored 11 to lead the 11th-seeded Eagles (7-23), who had their worst season since going 6-21 in 1994-95.

(11) GREEN BAY 85, LOYOLA 56: Julie Wojta scored 24 points, and Green Bay pulled away in the second half for a win over Loyola in Chicago.

Wojta was 9 of 14 from the floor, part of a 53 percent shooting night for the Phoenix, who reached the 26-win mark for the eighth time in school history. The Phoenix had already clinched the Horizon League regular-season championship.

Stephanie Sension added 14 points for Green Bay, and Adrian Ritchie and Lydia Bauer had 10 apiece.

Monica Albano led the Ramblers with 14 points and Patrice King scored 10.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

(22) FLORIDA STATE 63, (24) VIRGINIA 60: Ian Miller’s last-second 3-pointer from the right wing gave the visiting Seminoles a stunning victory over the Cavaliers.

“When it left my hand, I knew it was good,” the sophomore said about the shot with a hand in his face and 0.8 seconds left.

Florida State rallied from 11 points down in the last 4 1/2 minutes for the victory.

Miller matched his career high with 18 points, and had 15 after halftime, helping spoil senior night for Virginia and Mike Scott.

Scott scored 28 points, his career high in an ACC game, for the Cavaliers who lost for the first time in 18 games this season when scoring 60 points.

(13) MICHIGAN 72, ILLINOIS 61: Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 25 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and led the Wolverines to a win over the fading Illini.

Trey Burke added 21 for Michigan, 14 of them in a couldn’t-miss first half that almost sank Illinois.

The Wolverines led throughout for their first win in Champaign since 1995. They hit 46.7 percent of their shots, including nine of the 19 3-point tries, and were 21 of 23 from the free throw line.
