LEWISTON – Ivan Reese scored on a 1-yard run with 42 seconds remaining to give Bates a 20-16 win over Tufts in a New England Small College Athletic Conference football game Saturday.
Reese’s touchdown capped a 17-play, 96-yard drive.
Bates (1-1) built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind touchdown runs of 48 and 7 yards by Shawn Doherty, who finished with 182 yards on 24 carries.
Ryan Curit added 93 yards on 21 carries.
Tufts (0-2) responded with 16 straight points, taking the lead 3:12 into the fourth quarter on Jackson Brockhorst’s 27-yard field goal, his third of the game.
MIDDLEBURY 27, COLBY 10: Matt Crimmins returned an interception 15 yards for the tiebreaking touchdown just 14 seconds into the fourth quarter as the Panthers (2-0) beat the Mules (1-1) at Middlebury, Vt.
Colby erased an early 10-0 deficit with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Justin Ciero to Luke Duncklee in the second quarter and a 27-yard field goal by Louw Scheepers in the third.
Ciero completed 23 of 38 passes for 203 yards and rushed for 50 yards on 14 carries.
AMHERST 27, BOWDOIN 11: Max Lippe passed for a pair of touchdowns as the Lord Jeffs (2-0) pulled away from the Polar Bears (0-2) at Amherst, Mass.
Trey Brown scored the lone touchdown for Bowdoin on a 2-yard run with 3:55 remaining.
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 59, MAINE MARITIME 0: Terrence N’Dabian ran for 152 yards and two touchdowns, and Kevin Cook added 122 yards and three touchdowns as the Golden Bears (1-2) rushed for nearly 600 yards against the Mariners (0-3) at Springfield, Mass.
