Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Scarborough fullback Jess Babino woke the Red Storm with a bang.

Babino’s goal from 30-plus yards out tied the score at one with 32 minutes to play and sophomore Reegan Brackett added a goal of her own, as Scarborough defeated Deering, 2-1, at home Monday.

“The ball came out – one touch – BANG – she hit it at the goal,” Scarborough coach Mike Farley said of Babino’s play. “She drove it. The goalkeeper took one step backwards and it was over her head already.”

Scarborough (2-1) played uninspired soccer during the first half as Deering (1-2) went up, 1-0, with 21 minutes remaining.

“You can’t come out flat to any of the teams in this league,” Farley said. “It’s far too competitive and everybody wants to win so badly. If you come out flat the other team is going to put you under. That first half – we were lucky it was only 1-0. It could have easily been 2-0.”

Scarborough’s passes were inaccurate and they were not winning 50-50 balls during the first half and early moments of the second.

However the game changed after Babino’s goal.

The Red Storm began to dominate possession, controlling the ball at Deering’s end for the majority of the time.

With 14:26 to play the pressure paid off when Brackett one-timed a pass from Kate Pemberton from the right side into the back left corner of the net.

“It was a great run by (Brackett),” Farley said. “She really opened her space by getting out wide. She made that center back choose and Kate laid a nice perfect ball in there. It had perfect speed so (Brackett) could just hit it one time when she ran up to it.”

Like Babino’s, Bracket’s shot was well-driven – a line drive past the goalie.

“That’s what it takes a lot of times,” Farley said. “Elizabeth Deletesky is a very good goal keeper. It’s going to take something special to beat her for sure.”

Brackett, who swung between varsity and junior varsity last season as a freshman, has been scoring often for the Red Storm. She now has five goals in three games. She has a strong left-footed shot that can catch defenders off guard.

“It seems like she just needs one ball per game and she’s going to score the goal,” said Farley.

Scarborough defeated Deering, 4-0, in the JV game. Jenn Colpitts, Lily Parenteau, Julie Passarelli and Megan Cowie each scored goals for the Red Storm. Brittany Hardesty and Emily Heath each played a half in goal.

Scarborough was scheduled to play at Thornton Academy yesterday, and will face Nobel at home on Friday.
