Cape Elizabeth 1
Cape Elizabeth tied York, 1-1, at home Saturday.
“It’s always nice to get some sort of a result, but it’s much nicer to win a game than to tie,” said Cape coach Ben Raymond.
York (6-3-1) took the lead midway through the first half, but Cape (5-4-1) answered with 39 seconds remaining when Brad Doliner scored amid traffic in front of York’s goal.
The second half featured multiple scoring chances for both teams but both goalies, Will Russell for Cape and Dan Graziano for York, made big saves for their teams.
The biggest of Russell’s saves came with 5:30 left to play. Russell stopped a York breakaway that had begun at midfield by coming out of goal, diving to his side and corralling the ball just in front of the York forward.
“He made the saves he was supposed to make today,” said Raymond. “He played very well. He’s made some mistakes. Today he was fairly mistake-free and the mistakes he did make didn’t get capitalized on. He made some big saves when he had to.”
Both five-minute overtime periods featured scoring chances for both teams, with neither able to find the back of the net for the winning goal.
Russell finished with seven saves for the Capers while Graziano made five for York.
Cape was scheduled to host Freeport (4-6) Wednesday and plays at rival Falmouth (8-1-1) Saturday.
