Wells 0

Cape Elizabeth 7

To say Cape Elizabeth’s 7-0 victory over Wells on Saturday was decided by defense would be an understatement.

Both offenses were held scoreless.

The game’s only score came when Cape’s Bogie Foden scooped up a Wells fumble at his own 18-yard line and raced 82 yards down the sideline for a touchdown late in the first quarter.

“Someone tackled (the ball carrier) perfectly,” Foden said, “getting a head on the ball and it popped out. I just did what I was supposed to do.”

Twice Wells (3-2) moved the ball inside Cape’s 20-yard line and on both occasions the Capers recovered fumbles to end the drive. The first resulted in Foden’s touchdown.

The second came late in the third quarter. Wells had first-and-goal on the 4-yard line. On first and second down Cape stuffed Wells fullback Mike Cooledge. On third down the Warriors put the ball on the ground where Nathaniel Lavallee recovered for the Capers.

In all Cape (5-0) forced five turnovers. Adam Danielson, Andrew Cohn and Ryan Strout each had interceptions.

Both Foden and Cape quarterback Jeff Bump said the Capers hang their hat on their defense. A defense that hadn’t allowed more than eight points in a game until last week’s 27-21 win over Greely.

“Our defense came to play,” said coach Aaron Filieo. “Last week we got embarrassed a little bit defensively. We let them get a lot of points on the board. We challenged our defense to come and play today and they did.”

Good thing.

Cape was never able to move the ball inside Wells’ 20-yard line. Six drives ended via the punt.

“Their defensive line came out fired up and we came out flat,” said Bump. “We never really established a passing game. We were trying to get the running game going the entire game but it wasn’t there. They were just too fired up.”

The Capers best drive came in the fourth quarter. With 6:30 remaining in the game and clinging to its 7-0 lead, Cape’s offense needed to take time off the clock.

They did just that, twice converting crucial third downs. On third-and-six Bump hit Sean Meagher with a screen pass. The fullback bounced off a Wells defender in the backfield and rumbled for a first down.

Then on third-and-10 Bump threw to Foden who was streaking down the sideline for a 28-yard gain.

“We made some big plays down the stretch but we could never ever get into a rhythm offensively,” said Filieo.

The drive ended with a fumble after Cape reached the Warrior’s 28, but four minutes had run off the clock since the drive began.

Wells’ final drive went nowhere and on fourth-and-10 with less than two minutes to play Ian Wallace sacked Wells quarterback Jamie Holland to seal the victory. Jonathon Lavallee also pressured Holland on the play.

Cape faces Lake Region (0-5) next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. It is the Capers’ final home game of the season.

“We believe we are going to win every game,” said Filieo. “Some games are uglier than others and this game was ugly.”
