Scarborough police arrested two men on Halloween night after a brief chase that ended with a crash in the woods.

During the night, a resident on Jana Lane called police to report a suspicious car in the area. When police arrived, the car began to leave and police recognized it as a car reported stolen in Bangor on Oct. 29.

Police attempted to stop the car, but it fled along Gorham Road to Sweetbrier Lane. After less than a mile, the car crashed into the woods and the two men inside fled on foot. After a short foot chase and search of the woods, Charles Richards, 35, of Bangor and Mark Chubbuck, 41, of Ellsworth Falls, were arrested and taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment. As of noon on Nov. 1, both men were still at the hospital, where Richards is in satisfactory condition and Chubbuck is in fair condition. After treatment, they will be taken to Cumberland County Jail.

Richards was charged with possession of cocaine, eluding an officer, refusing to submit to arrest, unauthorized use of a vehicle, drunken driving, operating after suspension and violating bail conditions. Chubbuck was charged with possession of stolen property, possession of cocaine and refusing to submit to arrest.
