A student-athlete’s academic achievement, community involvement and playing ability will get them noticed. And if a Maine high school hockey player possesses high levels of all three traits, he deserves some type of recognition. And that’s the reason the Travis Roy Award is such a special and meaningful award on the Maine winters sports scene.

In an announcement from last week, Scarborough senior forward Brent Mayo was selected as one of three finalists for this year’s Travis Roy Award. The award is presented each year to the top senior high school hockey player in Class A. It will be presented at the end-of-season Class A hockey banquet on March 18 in Lewiston. The other two finalists are James Tolan of Falmouth and Kit Smith of Brunswick.

Mayo has been captain of the Scarborough ice hockey team since his sophomore season, which speaks volumes about his attitude and his leadership qualities.

“They give him respect because of what he does and how he carries himself,” Scarborough coach Jay Mazur said explaining why three years of Red Storm teammates have voted him as their captain.

“I was definitely excited,” Mayo said upon hearing he was named a finalist. He actually was told by a teammate that he was one of the three players selected. And that’s probably appropriate seeing as he credits his teammates for being chosen.

“They’ve been supportive and it’s all because of them that this happened,” said Mayo referring to all his teammates in general and his 14 senior teammates in particular.

Mayo currently has 13 goals and 34 assists this season as the Red Storm headed to Tuesday night’s West A regional final against Biddeford. He has a total of 152 points in his four years with the Scarborough varsity squad.

He plans on either playing juniors next year or perhaps attending a prep school where he can better prepare for a collegiate hockey career. “My biggest goal would be to play Division I,” said Mayo.
