Last week, sophomores at Scarborough High School got the chance to think about their future careers. On March 13, instead of heading to their normal classes, the students heard from more than 50 different local presenters about their careers.

The presenters ranged from a physical therapist to people involved in the performing arts, with nurses, lawyers, entrepreneurs, police and a game warden – just to name a few.

The career expo was organized by the Scarborough Community Chamber, which provided facilitators for all of the groups and helped give the kids an introduction to the working world. Small panels of presenters were grouped by similar careers and they talked to groups of students that visited each cluster on a rotation.

The idea for the expo came about four years ago when members of the Scarborough Community Chamber board of directors sent out a survey to members asking how could the chamber add value to the community. The overwhelming response was to reach out to high school students and talk to them about their future careers.

After a year of work between the school and the chamber, the expo was launched, and has grown every year.
