Musicians from South Portland and Cape Elizabeth emerged victorious from last weekend’s State Jazz Festival held at Strearns High School in Millinocket.

South Portland competed in Division I, while Cape Elizabeth competed in Division II. The concert jazz ensembles from both schools took first place in their respective divisions. Cape Elizabeth was also awarded first place in the jazz combo category.

Both schools also had several individual award winners. From South Portland, senior Neil Pearlman, who played both piano and trombone, was recognized as Outstanding Soloist of Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo, and freshman Blake Hawley was recognized as Outstanding Soloist of Jazz Ensemble.

Several Cape Elizabeth musicians were recognized as most valuable players. Sophomores Luc Cary, bassist, and Brandon Meagher, drummer, were Most Valuable Players in the multi-band category. Meagher was also a Most Valuable Player for jazz combo. On the tenor saxophone, junior Dylan Sherry was an Most Valuable Player in the large ensemble category along with senior drummer Jeff Witherell.
