Northern Chi Martial Arts has opened a new adult and teen program in Scarborough.

The program is under the direction of Matthew and Amber Merrill, with a team of other experienced black-belt instructors.

“It’s very exciting to offer a martial-arts training program geared for adults of all ages,” said Amber Merrill. “The systematic learning approach offered by kenpo karate blends well with adults’ needs for practical learning combined with attention to the history and tradition of the martial arts.”

Classes in the new program consist of adults aged 13 to 65, and learning is geared to an individual’s goals and abilities.

The recent grand opening was celebrated with a special class of four black-belt instructors, who demonstrated their areas of expertise, including ground fighting, self-defense, weapons training and martial arts fundamentals.

Northern Chi Martial Arts, located at 136 U.S. Route 1 in Scarborough, offers instruction in kenpo karate, t’ai chi and self-defense. It was founded in 1994.
