On May 2, the Scarborough Little League kicked off its season with a game featuring the top two teams from the 2007 season, the Royals and the Knights of Columbus. After the opening ceremonies, which featured the introduction of the previous years’ championship teams for both the baseball and the softball programs, the presentation of a sign to recognize annual Scarborough Little League baseball championship teams donated from the children of the late Doug Harmon and the announcement of the planting of a tree at the St. Max Field by long time sponsor Lappin Landscaping in memory of past volunteer Kevin Ryan, the baseball season got under way.

In a hard-fought game, the Royals defeated the Knights of Columbus 4-1. Ben Greenberg pitched an exceptional game, recording 15 strikeouts with only two walks. He allowed only one hit, a fourth inning home run by Nick Bagley of the Knights. Greenberg also went 2 for 2 with a walk at the plate, smacking a home run and a triple. Ryan Collins had a strong game behind the plate as Greenberg’s battery mate, and went 1-2. Sean Getchell closed the game for Greenberg in the sixth inning with two strikeouts against the only two batters he faced.

Cornerstone 6

Michaud 5

On May 3, Cornerstone Home Mortgage beat Michaud Distributors 6-5 in a close game. Leading the way for Cornerstone was Ian Morris with three hits and a two-run inside-the-park homer. Other hits were made by Cameron Loiselle, John Timpson and Matt Gedaro. Pitching in his first Little League start was Brendan McKillop, who went four innings and Dan LeClair pitched two scoreless innings. Tim Ross went five strong innings for Michaud and had six strike outs. Leading the offense for Michaud was Patrick Stanton who went 1 for 3 with a triple. Also, Sam Dedian had a double, RBI, and a run scored.

Al’s Variety 8

Aero 1

Garrett McDonald pitched five strong innings of three-hit ball to lead Al’s Variety to an 8-1 victory over Aero at Peterson Field on May 7. Al’s Variety struck for two runs in the top of the first when Mitchell Rand singled sharply up the middle, McDonald walked, and both came home on Ben Farino’s double up the alley in left center. Al’s added three more in the top of the third on three walks, a couple of stolen bases, and Jack Vincent’s base hit. Aero starting pitcher Benito Onorato left runners stranded at 2nd and 3rd base when he struck out the last two batters of the inning to prevent further damage. Hits by Zach Carriero and Ben Bragg led to two more Al’s runs in the 4th inning. Charlie Mader’s leadoff triple and Austin Pemberton’s RBI single in the bottom of the 5th inning led to a run for Aero. Nick Lorello also recorded a hit for Aero. Jeff Russell closed the game for Al’s with a 1-2-3 sixth inning

Royal Flush 5

Kiwanis 4

On May 10 at Willey Field, the Royals faced Kiwanis in a game that ended up going 10 innings. The Royals got a walk-off win, defeating Kiwanis 5-4. Max Ornstein went 2-4 for the Royals with one run scored and a stolen base while also pitching two strong innings on the mound striking out three while only walking one. Sam Ware helped the Royals to victory with a single while Jordan Luong contributed to the offense going 2-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. For Kiwanis, Nick Suchecki (six strikeouts in four innings) and Sam Freeman (nine strikeouts in five + innings) pitched extremely well for Kiwanis. Freeman was able to tie the score in the 5th inning by belting a two-out bases-loaded single. Kenny Adams led the way offensively for Kiwanis, going 2-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Knights top Lions

The Knights of Columbus defeated the Lions on May 8 at Peterson Field. The Knights’ offense was led by Nick Bagley, who had his second homer of the year. Also, big hits by Jayme Lappin and Alex Lacognata helped to lead the rest of the offense. The Knights kept the Lions at bay with good pitching from Ryan Bailer and Jayme Lappin. Some big relief pitching from Mitchell Wedge, Cam Brochu, and Alex Lacognata helped to seal the win, allowing only a double off the bat of Mike Linehan. Justin Reynolds took the hill for the Lions, with rookies Jack Posey and Bradley Rockey each making their first relief appearance of the season.

Cornerstone 4

On May 6, the Royals matched up with Cornerstone Home Loan. The Royals ended up defeating Cornestone 10-4 behind the strong pitching of Matt Hartl, who struck out seven batters in just three innings of work. Hartl also went 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Alec Cohen went 2-2 with two runs scored for the Royals and Matt Morrell went 1-2 with one run scored. For Cornerstone, Matt Gedaro went 1-3 with a double and a run scored for Cornerstone. Cam Loiselle and Ian Morris each went 1-2 and had one run scored while catching strong games.

On May 8, the Royals played the Grasscatchers 12-6. Dan Hinrichs went 1-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases for the Royals while Alex Parachanian nearly homered, ending up with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI. Colby Whitaker paced the Royals offensively going 2-2 at the plate, two runs scored and a stolen base. For the Grasscatchers, Kevin Dryzga led his team going 1-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs while striking out six Royals in 3.1 innings of work. Sam Warren and Ben Lindsay each went 1-2 with a run scored for the Grasscatchers.

Knights of Columbus 6

Aero 5

The Knights of Columbus were victorious on may 10 against Aero. It was a hard-fought battle from the start with Jayme Lappin on the mound for the Knights. Aero was swinging the bats well and giving Knights a battle. Aero was led on the mound by Austin Pemberton and Ian Corey, who combined for 11 strikeouts. Aero continued to hit the ball well with strong games by Brendan Lorello, Benito Onorato and Brendan Kane. Pemberton’s double in the fourth inning gave Aero a short-lived lead. Nick Bagley came in for middle relief for the Knights. Ryan Bailer entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs. With just nine pitches he succeeded to get the Knights out of trouble. Cam Brochu took a hard shot at second base, bobbled the ball, but stuck with it to throw Pemberton out at first to keep the Knights in the game. With the Knights behind 5-4, Lappin ripped a triple down the right field line to tie the game, Bailer helped his own cause by singling in Lappin for the win.

Volk Packaging topped Community Builders 15-2 behind a great pitching job by Sarah Huber, who went four innings with six strikeouts. Grace Farnkoff led Volk with a strong bat and she scored three runs.

Kiwanis 9

The Grasscatchers beat Kiwanis 18-9 May 17. Brandon Watkins, Nate Wessel, Kevin Dryzga and Damian Ramsdell had two hits for the Grasscatchers. Chris Carter, Sam Nygren, Sam Warren, Alex Daniels, Jack Murphy and Ben Lindsey each had a hit as well. Kevin Dryzga pitched three scoreless innings and Watkins had four RBI’s. Not counting themselves out of the game, Kiwanis made a late comeback at the plate, led by rookie Chandler Langlois with two hits and three RBI’s. Joe Casale, Ryan Huber, Andrew Hopkins, Stephan Marchewka and Jack Goodwin also got hits for Kiwanis.

Al’s Variety 15

Lions 0

Ben Stone pitched five strong innings to lead Al’s Variety to a 15-0 win over the Lions on May 17. Stone recorded five strikeouts, just one walk and gave up three hits in his first outing of the season. Nick Frizzle pitched well for the Lions, holding Al’s to two runs over the first three innings before reaching the 85 maximum pitch count in the fourth inning. Ben Farino, Jeff Russell and Stone paced Al’s 15-hit attack with three hits each. Mitchell Rand, Garrett McDonald, and Xander Timpson also got hits for Al’s. Kyle Parrott, Nick Frizzle, Jack Posey, and Nathan Caldwell each got a hit for the Lions. Timpson recorded the last three outs of the game in the sixth inning for Al’s for the save.

Aero 5

Fire Department 2

Aero rode the solid pitching of Benito Onorato, Brendan Lorello, Wyatt Bridgham and Nick Lorello to defeat Fire Department 5-2. Austin Pemberton led the offensive charge for Aero with a bases-clearing triple in the first. Fire Dept. had fine pitching performances by Nate Bedor and Matt Aceto. Ashley Gleason thrilled the crowd with an inside-the-park home run on a shot down the left field line, scoring two runs for Fire Dept. Brandon Ruel also doubled for Fire Dept.

On May 16, the Royals beat Fire Department 10-7 behind the strong hitting of Alec Cohen, who belted a first inning three-run home run to get the Royals started. Cohen ended up 2-2 with two runs scored and 3 RBIs. Max Ornstein went 2-3 for the Royals with a run scored and an RBI and also picked up the save in the last inning with the winning run at the plate. Sean Getchell pitched three strong innings to get the win. Getchell struck out six while walking only two batters for Fire Department. Brandon Ruel went 1-2 with a run scored, Charlie Gardner went 2-4 with a run scored, and Ben Garrard pitched a great game.

Royal Flush over Michaud Distributors

On May 17, the Royals beat Michaud Distributors. The Royals were able to get out to an early lead in the first inning and used that momentum to ultimately win. Jordan Luong led the Royals with his hitting, going 3-4 to end up 5-7 in his last two games. Luong had two RBIs, two stolen bases, and a run scored in the game. Matt Hartl pitched four strong innings, picking up the win, getting nine strikeouts and only walking one. Hartl was 1-3 at the plate, scoring two runs and knocking in one. Ryan Collins closed the game for the Royals striking out three in his only inning of work while going 1-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Austin Hancock pitched a strong game for Michaud Distributors, striking out seven batters in four innings of work while walking only one. Patrick Stanton scored for his team recording two stolen bases, caught a strong game behind the plate, and got four strikeouts on the mound in only 1.3 innings. Juan German went 1-2 at the plate with a line drive base hit in the third inning and stole a base.
