Scarborough 7

Cheverus 2

Scarborough’s girls’ lacrosse team earned another trip to the Western Maine final with a dominant 7-2 win over visiting Cheverus Saturday night. The Red Storm were in complete control in the second half, netting three goals and allowing none. Lily Parenteau finished the game with 15 saves.

“We were patient, we were getting good looks, but I think their goalie just had a huge game,” said Cheverus head coach Jamie Chamberlain. “Every time we were there and we thought we could get it close, she made a big save. That was the main difference. Their defense tightened up in the second half and limited our opportunities.”

Scarborough scored first just over two minutes into the game. Natalie Cahoon got one by the Cheverus goalie on a free possession to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. Ellie Morin doubled the Scarborough lead just a few minutes later when she took a feed from Lindsay Hagerman and found the back of the cage.

Midway through the first half, the Stags found the net for the first time when Bethany Schleh ran across the front of the net and beat Parenteau. About 90 seconds later, the Stags tied the game at two goals apiece when Grace Fitzpatrick took the ball down the field by herself and cut in to get one past Parenteau. That was the last time anything got by Parenteau.

Scarborough took the lead for good with 6:03 to go in the first half. Hagerman circled around the net and fired one that snuck past the goalkeeper and into the net for a 3-2 Red Storm lead. Aubrey Wagner gave Scarborough a 4-2 lead when she bounced one in with 1:38 to play in the half.

“Defense was very big today,” said Scarborough head coach Marcia Wood. “Defense is all about communication, sliding and being very smart about it. They stepped up. They collapsed when they had to, they double teamed when they had to; my goalie was absolutely perfect tonight. She had some very big saves that kept us in the game.”

“They are sick,” Hagerman said of the Scarborough defense. “They’re so good. A lot of teams play zone but we just play straight man-to-man. Cat Thorpe will dominate anyone.”

The second half belonged to the Storm. Megan Cowries gave Scarborough a 5-2 lead early in the half with a goal on a free possession. Midway through the second half, Hagerman tallied her second goal of the game when she beat the goalkeeper down low.

“We kind of lost our fire in the first half and after that halftime speech, we came back strong,” Hagerman said.

“My halftime and my timeout speeches are always the same,” Wood said. “I’m not very creative. With any sport it comes down to who wants the ball more. I said if you walk off this field having any regrets, it’s the worst feeling. There isn’t another game to make up for those. You should walk off the field physically and mentally exhausted. You should push yourself. It’s all about who wants it more.”

Sarah Bonefant scored the final goal of the game. She gave Scarborough their winning margin, 7-2, when she scored with 5:27 to go.

Scarborough was scheduled to play in the Western Maine Final against Kennebunk on Wednesday (a game played after the Current’s deadline) for the right to represent the west in the Class A state championship on Saturday.
