Season outlook: “Storm Warning: Expectations are high,” Sterling said. “Senior leadership with an unselfish commitment to team goals will make this a great season. Many underclassmen will push our program to a higher level of performance. These men are the great, because they take care of our family first.”
Field Hockey
Coach: Kerry Mariello
Last year’s record: 12-1-1, Lost to Sanford in Regional Final
2008 Season: A 4-1 win over Windham followed by a 6-1 thumping of Bonny Eagle gives the Red Storm a 2-0 start.
Key players: Brittany Ross, Cara Snyder
Key games this season: Sept. 20 @ Sanford, Sept. 30 @ Biddeford, Oct. 4 @ Gorham
Outlook: The Red Storm boasted a young team last year that came together quickly and made it all the way to the regional finals. They will look to go further this year.
Boys Soccer
Coach: Mark Diaz
Last year’s record: 14 – 1 – 1
2008 Season: A 4-0 win over Kennebunk gives the Storm a 1-0 start.
Key players: Returning starters Adam Blanchard, Ian Philbrick, Nick Broadhurst, Nick Tolman, Ted Palmer, Buddy Reid
Key games this season: vs. Gorham Sept. 10, @ Westbrook Sept. 26, vs. Cheverus Oct. 4
Season outlook: “We have more experienced players returning than in the past, Diaz said. “We are hoping that experience will have a positive impact on our team and assist us on reaching our goals.”
Girls Soccer
Coach: Mike Farley
Last year’s record: 11-2-1, Lost to Greely in quarterfinals
2008 Season: The girls started their season with a tie with Kennebunk on Saturday.
Key players: Jenn Colpitts, Abby Van Note, Amy Buttarazzi, Reegan Brackett
Key games this season: Sept. 9 @ Gorham, Sept. 29 @ McAuley
Season outlook: The Red Storm earned the second seed last year in Class A West, but were ousted from the tournament in their first game. The team is stocked for another run at the title and should be playing late into October.
Golf
Coach: Mike Murphy
Last year’s record: 4-6
2008 Season: They opened with a 7-6 win over Cheverus and fell to Westbrook 12-1
Key players: Andrew Myers Neil Ravin
Key matches this season: all of them
Season outlook: “We will look to improve on last year’s record,” Murphy said. “We want to get better with each outing.”
Volleyball
Coach: Jody King
Last year’s record: 11 – 5
2008 Season: The volleyball team opened with a 3-0 loss to Falmouth but picked up a 3-2 win over Yarmouth on Monday.
Key players: Seniors Caitlin Cleary, Melissa Bowen, Kelsey Webber and Katrina Curneil
Key games this season: The Red Storm play Biddeford and Gorham twice.
Season outlook: “We will have many new players to our varsity squad,” King said. “They have worked hard in the off-season. We hope to make play-offs.”
Boys Cross Country
Coach: Jim Harmon
Last year’s record: Scarborough finished fifth in the regional meet and fourth in the state meet.
2008 Season: The boys opened their season in fine fashion with a win at the SMAA Relays in 60:23.
Key runners: Craig Robinson, Sam Chick, Nate Hathaway, Joe Prosack, Nick Violette, Sean Griffin, Brad Nakanishi, Duncan Scott and Jay Vachon.
Key meet this season: State championship meet with Lewiston and Cheverus.
Season outlook: “We should be a state title contender,” Harmon said, “but only time will tell.”
Girls Cross Country
Coach: Ron Kelly
Last year’s record: Regional champions, Class A state runners-up
2008 Season: The girls won the SMAA Relays to start the season with a time of 50:21.
Key players: Melissa Dellatorre, Whitney Chamberlain, Sarah Dugas, Libby Davis
Key games this season: Regional and state meets
Season outlook: The Red Storm were very young last year and still nearly took the state title. With that solid core, they should be considered the favorite to win it all this year.
