Leavitt 0

Cape Elizabeth 2

One minute. That’s all it took for Cape Elizabeth (3-0) to hand the Leavitt Hornets (4-1) their first loss of the season at the Portland Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Actually, to be completely accurate, it was a 44-second span at the end of the second period that was the difference in the game as Cape scored two quick goals in the final minute of the period to seal the win.

After a tightly-played first period where both teams weren’t able to take advantage of any scoring chances and both Cape goalie Phil Jordan (16 saves on 16 shots) and Hornets goaltender Cody Violette (26 saves on 28 shots) came up with some big saves, it appeared that the second period was going to go the same way of the first.

That was until Cape exploded in the final minute of the period.

First, at 14:09, the Capers got the puck in their own zone and wove down the ice with senior forward Zach Breed finding freshman forward Nick Breed in the Leavitt zone, Nick Breed then fired a cross pass to Zack Labbe who put it past Violette to give the Capers the 1-0 advantage.

Then, before the cheering Capers fans had completely settled down, they struck again.

With just 6.9 seconds showing on the clock, Cape’s Nick Breed found senior forward Sean Eubanks with a pass at center ice. Eubanks sprinted in past the Leavitt defense and fired a low shot that found the five-hole and Cape had a 2-0 lead going into the final period, which proved to be all they needed for the win.

With the win, Cape moves to 3-0 on the season. The Capers are off until after the New Year when they return with three consecutive home games against 1-1 Greely on Jan. 5, Houlton (0-2) on Jan. 9 and 2-1 Winslow on Jan. 10.
