According to the latest Heal Point boys hockey standings, Cape Elizabeth sits at No. 2 in Class B, which is the same position Falmouth occupies in the Class A standings, so it stands to reason that a matchup between the two teams would be a tight game.

And that’s exactly what happened Monday night as the Capers grabbed a 4-3 overtime win over the Yachtsmen in a thriller at the Portland Ice Arena. Cape’s Sean Eubanks sealed the win for Cape as he netted his second goal of the contest at 3:48 of overtime.

The game was the second game of the preliminary round of the third annual “Fix Cup”, a tournament dedicated to the memory of longtime Portland sports broadcaster Frank Fixaris. The Capers will face Greely, who beat Thornton Academy 5-4 in overtime in the first game, in the championship game at the Portland Ice Arena on Feb. 2 at 8 p.m.

Both teams came out flying to start the game, and Cape got on the board early as Eubanks scored with an assist from Sam St. Germain to give the Capers a 1-0 lead at 2:26 of the first.

But Falmouth came storming back and took a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. Mike Chase got the first Falmouth goal at 4:09 of the first, scoring a power play goal with an assist from Matt MacDowell. Seth Fortier gave the Yachtsmen a 2-1 lead at 9:03 of the first with assists from Chase and Julien Clement. Finally, with time running out in the first, Falmouth’s Dixon Pike got a power play goal off a rebound at 14:26 of the first. Clement got his second assist on the play.

As the teams skated off for the first intermission, it appeared that Falmouth had all the momentum in the game. But, Cape had other ideas.

The Capers cut the Falmouth lead to one just 2:45 into the second as Mike Holden blasted a shot from the point that went through a screen of players and past Falmouth goalie Jay Hurdmann. Eubanks was credited with an assist on the goal.

Just about a minute later, Cape tied the game at three. With Hurdmann down on the ice, a scrum formed in front of the net and Zach Breed got his stick on the puck and forced it home to tie the score at 3:52. Vinny Dell’Aquila and Reid Douty assisted on the goal.

Falmouth tried to retake the lead and got several good chances as both Emmett Brennan and Chase broke in alone on Cape goalie Phil Jordan, but both shots hit the post and the two teams went into the third period tied at three.

Neither team managed to score in the third, despite several power play chances for both sides, and the game went into overtime.

Eubanks ended the game at 4:12 of the eight-minute overtime as he took a pass from St. Germain off the boards at about center ice, Eubanks then sped in past the Falmouth defense and put a tough shot through Hurdmann’s five-hole for the game winner, sending the Capers to the Fix Cup championship next Monday night.
