Cape Elizabeth 73

Falmouth 70

Cape’s Alex Bowe picked a good time to have a big game.

In a battle between Cape and Falmouth, two of the top three teams in Class B West boys basketball, Bowe had a huge night, scoring 22 first-half points on his way to a game-high 31 last Friday night.

Bowe’s monster game helped lead the Capers (14-2) to a big road win over Falmouth (13-3) as Cape held on to take a close 73-70 decision. The game had a big effect on the latest Heal Point standings as the Yachtsmen dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 with Cape right on their heels at No. 3 as the playoffs approach. Greely sits in the top spot of the Class B Heals with a 14-2 record. The Capers get a shot at the top-ranked Rangers in the final game of the regular season at Cape on Feb. 6.

Cape pulled to a quick nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter, with Bowe scoring 16 of the Capers’ 23 points in the first eight minutes of the contest. The Capers extended that lead to 11 at halftime, going into the break up 38-27.

The Yachtsmen came out on fire in the second half, quickly cutting the Cape lead to five in the first three minutes of the third before Cape’s Conor Lawler (14 points) came up with a couple of big hoops to break the momentum.

But the Yachtsmen kept up the attack and behind the scoring of Ryan Rogers (who scored a team-high 27 points) and Stefano Mancini, Falmouth erased the Capers’ lead and took a 53-52 lead into the fourth.

The fourth quarter was a seesaw affair with the teams exchanging the lead for most of the quarter.

With the game tied at 64 with just 1:03 left in regulation, Cape’s Cam Brown (who finished with five points, all in the fourth quarter) brought the Cape fans to their feet as he drove the lane and hit a running layup while being fouled on the play. Brown hit the free throw and Cape had a 67-64 lead.

Down the stretch, the Capers got huge buckets from Andrew Dickey (15 points, 10 in the fourth) and Bowe while playing tight defense to hang on for the win.

The Capers were scheduled to play No. 5 Yarmouth on Feb. 3 (after the Current’s deadline) before the showdown against Greely on Friday night. The Capers traveled to Cumberland to face the Rangers on Jan. 12 and came away with a 72-64 win.
