SOUTH PORTLAND — The City Council on Monday will discuss ways to expand the city’s curbside recycling program to include 1,100 apartment and condominium units throughout the city.
City officials encourage the public to attend and voice their opinions of the options to be presented.
The council has been split about expanding the recycling programs to condo and apartment complexes. While some believe recycling should be provided to every resident, others argue that facilities were not built to the standards that would allow trash and recycling haulers to access the facilities.
While increasing the recycling rate would reduce the city’s solid waste budget, councilors are unsure whether the additional costs from reopening the contract with the city’s trash hauler would be fiscally responsible, since additional recycling bins and labor would be required.
The workshop will take place at 6:30 p.m. April 13 in the senior wing of the Community Center, 21 Nelson Road.
