The best of the best runners, jumpers and throwers from the city of Portland took part in the outdoor track and field state championship meets Saturday.

At the Class A meet in Saco, Cheverus’ boys capped their solid campaign by scoring 53 points to come in fourth. Bonny Eagle won the title with 77 points. Portland, led by standout sophomore Imadhi Zagon, placed sixth with 38 points. Deering (12 points) tied Kennebunk for 15th.

In the girls’ meet, won by Edward Little with 136 points, Cheverus wound up ninth with 30. Deering placed 14th with 10.5. Portland did not score.

McAuley took part in the Class B state meet on Mt. Desert Island. The Lions were 11th with 14 points. Waterville won the crown with 119.

In Class C, Waynflete traveled to Bath. Neither Flyers squad was able to score.

Boys make noise

In the Class A boys’ meet, Cheverus featured a first-place 3,200 relay team. Junior Taylor Dundas, sophomore Jack Terwilliger, senior Josh Reali and junior Andrew Snyder rolled to a win in 8 minutes, 2.68 seconds.

Terwilliger was also the champion in the two-mile (9:36.91).

Junior Beau Michaud was runner-up in the discus (154 feet, 6 inches). Junior John White came in third in the discus (153 feet) and placed fifth in the shot put (49-7.25). Junior Tim Woods came in second in the 800 (1:59.27). Dundas was fourth in the mile (4:28.40) and also came in fourth in the two-mile (9:41.49).

For Portland, Zagon won the title in the 100 (11.28 seconds), the 200 (22.96) and the long jump (22 feet, 1.5 inches). He was also runner-up in the high jump (6 feet), meaning he accounted for all of his team’s points and personally outscored 21 other teams.

Deering was paced by senior Mike Tifiano, who was second in the 110 hurdles (15.50). Tifiano also came in sixth in the 300 hurdles (42.65). Senior David Hart placed sixth in the javelin (150-4).

Cheverus finishes strong

The Cheverus girls enjoyed one of their finest seasons to date this spring and capped the year in style Saturday. Junior Hanna Lyons was third in the 100 (12.99). Junior Liana Rubinoff came in third in the two-mile (11:38.16) and was sixth in the mile (5:27.30). Sophomore Caroline Summa was fourth in the high jump (5 feet), fourth in the triple jump (33-7.75) and placed fifth in the 400 (1:00.37). Junior Amelia Lundkvist placed fifth in the mile (5:19.31) and was sixth in the two-mile (11:45.65).

For Deering, junior Claire Ramonas came in second in the shot put (37-5.25). Sophomore Britni Mikulanecz placed sixth in the 300 hurdles (47.96). Angela Balzano tied for seventh in the high jump (4-8).

At the Class B girls’ meet, McAuley got third-place finishes from senior standout Olivia MacKenzie in both the mile (5:18.87) and two-mile (11:39.43). Freshman Christina Leake placed sixth in the 400 (1:02.63).

New Englands

The New England championships will be held this upcoming Saturday in Burlington, Vt. The event marks the final competition of the 2008-09 school year.

Portland’s superb sophomore Imadhi Zagon spent plenty of time on the victory block Saturday at the Class A state outdoor track meet. Zagon won three events and was runner-up in a fourth to account for all 38 of the Bulldogs’ points.
