ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Francis “Whitey” Boyle, 78, formerly of Portland, died Sept. 3 following complications from surgery.
Born Aug. 25, 1931, he was a son of Walter F. and Barbara (Ridge) Boyle. At a young age, his hair turned white, earning him the nickname “Whitey.”
After attending Portland High and Jesuit High School, he enlisted in the National Guard. From 1950 to 1953 he served in the Army during the Korean War as a communications technician.
He was married to Patricia Traynor and together they had seven daughters.
He was a baker for J.J. Nissen’s Bakery in Portland from 1965 until his retirement in 1993.
In 1995, he moved to Jensen Beach, Fla.
He was a hardworking, caring and devoted father known for his strong Christian faith, jolly demeanor and physical resemblance to Santa Claus.
He was predeceased by his wife Patricia on Aug. 30, a sister, Betty Bennett and brother-in-law, John McFarland.
He is survived by his seven daughters, Susan Rock and Charlie Burnham of Freeport, Cheryl and Charlie Wallace of Portland, Shirley Boyle, Sandra Boyle of Greene, Betty Eyler of Standish, Sally Boyle of Brunswick, and Kelly and Michael Schell of Windham; a sister, Barbara McFarland of Portland; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations can be made to Feed The Children.
Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.
