Supporters of the right to openly carry firearms are planning a public event Sunday, April 25, in Portland.
The event will take place at 2 p.m., in the parking lot across from Hannaford Supermarket at Back Cove. Similar open-carry events have taken place recently around the country, organized by people who want to publicize the right to have properly holstered handguns in daily life.
Maine law allows people to openly carry a gun without a permit, according to Shane Belanger, an organizer. The Portland event isn’t meant to be a rally or protest, Belanger said, but an informational gathering.
