A political blogger who operates out of Washington, D.C., is reporting that Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Richardson of Brunswick will hold a news conference today to announce he intends to withdraw from the race.

Matt Gagnon said in his Sunday blog that the announcement is still tentative, but that is the plan, according to a source close to Richardson. He did not name the source.

Richardson, who is a lawyer, served in the Legislature including a stint as Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives. In 2007, he was named commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development.

Richardson could not be reached for comment Sunday night.

According to his website, Gagnon is a Republican digital communications consultant, operating primarily in Washington, D.C.

He serves as deputy director of digital strategy for the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Gagnon, a University of Maine graduate, is editor in chief of his political blog, “Pine Tree Politics.”

He calls in every Wednesday to “Drive Time,” a radio show on WMEB 91.9 FM in Orono.
