Firefighters have extinguished a tractor-trailer fire near mile marker 17 northbound on the Maine Turnpike, and two lanes of traffic are now open.
Delays are expected as traffic returns to normal.
Witnesses reported the rig of the truck on fire at about 1:30 p.m. and later said the fire had consumed the rig. There has been no report of injuries, authorities said. The fire had spread to nearby grass, authorities said.
The fire brought traffic to a standstill for miles. The baseball, softball and tennis teams from York High School were stuck in traffic on their way to events in Cumberland and Cape Elizabeth, and were forced to postpone their games.
